  1. ETR 790 Activity Systems Analysis Methods Lisa Yamagata-Lynch

  2. About the course • Introduction to Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) • Week 2-7 • Introduction to activity systems analysis • Week 5-11 • Engage in your own research from a CHAT perspective and using activity systems analysis • Week 9-15

  3. About CHAT and activity systems analysis • CHAT goes back to Vygotsky’s work in the 1920s to 1930s • Activity systems analysis is one data analysis method within CHAT developed by Engeström in late 1980s • Many existing authors refer to activity systems analysis and activity theory synonymously, but I do not see it that way. • CHAT and activity systems analysis is a great perspective/methodological tool for analyzing complex qualitative data sets

  4. Why bother with CHAT, can’t I just learn about activity systems analysis? • Critical methodological concepts in activity systems analysis such as mediated action, object-oriented activity, goal-directed action, and the dialectical relationship between the organism and the environment are directly from CHAT. • Researchers need to develop a sophisticated understanding of CHAT concepts to take advantage of activity systems analysis. • Without a thorough understanding of CHAT, activity systems analysis can be used in a manner that oversimplifies observations in the natural setting

  5. Much needed discussions in CHAT and activity systems analysis • Majority of discussions in the field tend to focus on theoretical concepts. • Need more discussion on • Practical applications • Methodological issues • Transferability of applications and methodologies

  6. Why are you here? • Why are you interested in CHAT and activity systems analysis? • Do you have an ongoing project that you would like to conduct an activity systems analysis research? If yes, what is it about? If not what future projects do you see yourself engaging in? • What do you want to accomplish from this course?

  7. Tips for readings for Week 2—When reading Yamagata-Lynch (2010) • Fuel Prices Squeeze School Districts—New York Times Article by Pat Wiedenkeller at: • http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/07/nyregion/nyregionspecial2/07Rbus.html • Can you think of any other value in using activity systems analysis in research • What are the potential value for using activity systems analysis in your future research?

  8. Tips for readings for Week 2—When reading Rasmussen & Ludvigsen(2009) • Make note of how the authors understand • CHAT • Activity systems analysis • Mediation/mediated action • Expansive learning • Dialectics • Object-oriented activity • Methodologically how did the authors use activity systems analysis? • What did the authors gain methodologically and in their discussion of the data by using activity systems analysis?
