Early Late • Not organized • Not professional • Basically a militia • Consisted of raiding parties on surrounding villages. • Based on Etruscan and Greek armies. • The first soldiers to strike were the ‘hastati’ who struck first then fell back when ‘ things got too hot’. • The soldiers were ‘half trained, half equipped, incompetent farmers. • The soldiers couldn’t prevent the fall of the Empire, they were too horribly trained.   3. Gaius Marius • He was elected 7 times, very rare back then. • He was a harsh and ambitious man. • He reformed the Roman army in the later Republic. • He was a general, one of the best of his time. • He was also an able bodied soldier in the field of battle.
