  2. Movement of Rocks Builds Mountains • Mountains • An area of land that rises steeply compared to the area around it (Everest, Lemmon) • Mountain Range • Long lines of mountains formed at the same time and by the same process • Rockies, Catalinas, Himalayas

  4. Mountain Belts • Mountain Belts: Mountain ranges that are close together

  5. Mountains Wear Down • Erosion: the process of wearing something down, usually by wind or water • New mountains are tall and steep, while old mountains are rounded and shorter • Land becomes flat as mountains wear down and valleys fill with their sediment

  6. Folded Mountains • Folded Mountains: As continental crust is stressed and bends upwards • They can form from subduction or from continental-continental convergence • What is different between the 2?

  7. Fault Block Mountains • Fault Block Mountains: form from blocks of rock that move up or cown along NORMAL faults • These cause earthquakes • Blocks that move upward form mountains, blocks that move down form valleys
