  2. First Thoughts • What was the first thing that crossed your mind when I said the title of our lesson for today? • How do you think the Universe came to be? • What different ideas do people have about the History of the Universe? • Share your thoughts with someone sitting next to you.

  3. Did any of these words come to your mind? • Creation • God • The big bang theory • Evolution • The Bible • Many years ago….. • Genesis

  4. Christian Science • We know that Christian Scientists have different beliefs than main-stream scientists. Christians believe God created the world whereas most secular Scientists believe that the universe resulted from a big bang and was not designed or planned. Christian Scientists need to understand theories such as the Big Bang Theory so that they will know what they are going up against. In order to really explain what you believe it is always good to understand the opposing views. • In today’s lesson we will be learning about the Big Bang Theory and other ideas about the history of the Universe.

  5. Moving Galaxies • Many astronomers study how galaxies are moving now in order to understand how galaxies moved and came to be at the beginning of history. • Astronomers measure the distances and spectrums of galaxies to see how fast they are moving and weather they are moving towards or away from our galaxy. • Most of the galaxies are moving away from the Milky Way. • Edwin Hubble discovered that the further a galaxy is from us, the faster it is moving.

How does the Universe Expand?- Balloon Activity (activity on page 741 of text) • Starting with the right row and working left across the room, come up front and pick up a balloon and a marker, and then return to your seat. • Use the marker to draw 10 dots on the balloon. Draw some close together and others far apart. These dots represent galaxies. • Blow up the balloon. What happens to the distances between galaxies that are close together? The ones that are far apart? • As the Universe expands, galaxies that are closer together move more slowly than galaxies that are farther apart. Imagine you were sitting on one of the dots. No matter which one you sit on, all of the galaxies appear to be moving away from you.

Moving Galaxies • What would happen if you let all the air out of your balloon? • Some astronomers believe that the universe will eventually contract like a deflating balloon. • How might this happen? • One explanation is that the gravitational attraction between galaxies would pull them all together.

  8. The Big Bang Theory • Scientists believe that billions of years ago, the universe was a small, hot and dense point in space. This hot material exploded and all of the hot material spread across the Universe. This is what astronomers call the big bang. • Since this huge explosion 10 to 15 billion years ago, the universe has been rapidly expanding. A result of the big bang would be how the galaxies are moving away from each other. • Your text book gives a good visual example of what this might have looked like: “To understand this change in size, picture a tiny pea. Pretend you can blow it up to be as big as Earth. You would be inflating the pea by about 2 billion times. Like the pea, the universe in which you live was once very small” (pg.743).

  9. Formation of the Solar System • The gases and dust from the big bang spread out through space and gathered to form the galaxies and the solar system.

  10. What does the future hold? • What will happen to the Universe as time goes on? Here are some ideas listed in your text book. • It will continue to expand • The stars will run out of fuel and everything will be cold and dark • The universe will stop expanding and then pull into a “big crunch” • Everything will be sucked into a big black hole • Astronomers do not think there is enough gravitational pull for the universe to collapse; however, not much is known about the universe and more research needs to be done.

The History of the Universe from a Christian Perspective • Christians do not believe that the universe just appeared; rather, Christians believe that God designed the entire universe. • We do need to remember that the universe does change, so we cannot just ignore science. • We see and experience God in two ways. One is through scripture and the other is through creation. This is why science is important. It helps us understand God by studying his creation. • The question now is: “How do science and the Bible fit together?” • There are several different approaches to this.

  12. Different approaches to Creation • Christians hold many different views on creation. Some factors that effect these views are listed here. • The Genesis account of creation- can it be taken literally? • Were the days of creation like days today? • How active was and is God on creation? • How did God create the Universe? • Can evolution fit into creation? • How long ago was creation? • When did Biblical events take place? Let’s discuss some of these questions together.

  13. What really matters? • As you can see, there are many different views on creation. Sometimes this can cause conflicts among Christians. • The most important thing for you to remember are these two things: • We can never be completely sure how the Universe came to be, but we can have faith that our great God did indeed meticulously design the vast universe in which we live. • Even though it is good to study science and explore God’s creation, faith and a relationship with God is MUCH more important. “ In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…and it was very good” Genesis 1:1,31

Reflection • Now that you have learned about secular theories on the history of the universe and Christian views on Creation, you will write two reflection paragraphs. • In the first paragraph, you should explain your thoughts, understandings or questions on the Secular views we studied. Consider these questions: • Do you think the secular theories, like the big bang theory, make sense? • Why do you think so many people believe them? Is it because they refuse to believe in God? • How did you feel about learning this information? Did it bother you? • In the second paragraph, you should explain your thoughts on the different views of creation. Consider these questions? • What did you think about creation before this lesson? • What do you believe about creation now? • What questions still bother you about creation?
