  1. Muttiah Muralitharan Controversy in sport BY JOE FREEMAN

  2. Growing Up • His was born in a village called Nattarampotha in Kundasale which is close to Kandy, Sri Lanka. • His grandfather came from Southern India to work in the Sri Lankan tea plantations. • He had three younger brothers. • When Murali was nine years old he went to St.Anthony’s college in Kandy, it was a private school run by monks. • His father runs a biscuit making-business.

  3. Cricket Education • Muralitharan began his cricketing career as a medium pace bowler but his school coach advised him to bowl spin. • He soon impressed many people and played for the school first XI. • Back then he batted in the middle order. • In his last two seasons at St Anthony,s College he took over one hundred wickets and was then named the Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year. • When Murali left school he joined Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club.

  4. PRO CRICKET • Muralitharan’s first class career started in Sri Lanka for the Tamil union cricket and Athletics club. • He played for Lancashire from 1999-2007 • He played for Kent in 2003 • His first International test match was againist Australia in 1992 • His first International one day was againist India in 1993 • So far in his career he has played 120 tests with 735 wickets and has played 305 ODI (one day internationals) with 464 wickets. • He is currently playing for Sri Lanka and Tamil Union Cricket and Athletics Club.

  5. Bowling Controversy • Muralitharan has been tested 4 times for his bowling action to find out whether or not he is chucking the ball. • First set of tests: In 1995 Darrel Hair called a No ball to Muralitharan’s bowling action. At the End of the season Murali underwent tests at the University of Western Australia and at the University of Hong Kong. They declared that Murali’s action was legal due to the fact that he has a congenital defect in his arm making him unable to straighten his arm. They also found out that when he bowls it creates an optical illusion of throwing. • Second set of tests: 98-99 Tour of Australia, Murali was again called for throwing, but again was cleared. • Third set of tests: 16.3.04 vs Australia in Kandy, Murali’s “doosra” delivery was questioned and the angle of his arm did not meet approved standards for spin bowlers. However, he was cleared because the officials decided the angles needed to be changed. • Fourth set of tests: 2.2.06. People disputed the previous tests because he wasn’t bowling at normal speed and that might have affected the final results.

  6. Bowling Statistics Now that's flipping good!

  7. Achievment despite putdowns • Murali has achieved many great things although he has been criticised by lots of people including….. • Most international test wickets • Most 5 wicket hauls in an innings at Test level (63) • Most 10 wicket hauls in a match at Test level (20) • Only player to take 10 wickets in a Test in 4 consequetive matches • Only bowler to take 75 or more wickets in a calender year (in 2000,2001 and 2006) • Only player to take 50 or more wickets against EVERY Test playing nation + =

  8. Conclusion What I have found out, is that Murali has made astonishing achievements in spite of sporting adversity. (He also looks like a NUTTER when he appeals !!!)
