  3. MESEOLITIC • pertaining to, or characteristic of a transitional period of the Stone Age intermediate between thePaleolithic and the Neolithic periods, characterized by adaptation to a hunting, collecting, and fishingeconomy based on the use of forest, lakeside, and seashore environments; Epipaleolithic.

  4. NEOLITIC • Although no definite records exist it is believed that the first population of the islands were Cro-Magnons from North-west Africa who arrived on the islands towards the end of the Neolithic age.

  5. BRONZE AGE • The Bronze Age is a period characterized by the use of copper and its alloy bronze and proto-writing, and other features of urban civilization.

  6. IRON AGE • The Iron Age is the period generally occurring after the Bronze Age, marked by the prevalent use of iron. • The early period of the age is characterized by the widespread use of iron or steel. The adoption of such material coincided with other changes in society, including differing agricultural practices, religious beliefs and artistic styles. The Iron Age as an archaeological term indicates the condition as to civilization and culture of a people using iron as the material for their cutting tools and weapons. The Iron Age is the third principal period of the three-asystem created by Christian Thomsen (1788–1865) for classifying ancient societies and prehistoric stages of progress.

  7. ROMANS • The Roman Empire (Latin: imperiumromanum) was the largest empire of the ancient world. Its capital was Rome, and its empire was based on the Mediterranean. The Empire dates from 27 BC, when Octavian became the Emperor, Augustus.

  11. 16 AND 17 CENTURY • The modern world began sometime around 1500, at least according to most of the experts. By that date, the Renaissance had been underway in Italy for about 150 years and its ideas had spread throughout Europe. It is impossible to catch the complete flavor of the Renaissance in the brief space possible here, but at its heart it consisted of a new "worldliness," a new emphasis on human abilities. The Church, which since the fall of Rome had been the center of European culture, had lost its dominance. Now laymen (and a few women) wrote works in the vernacular languages that dealt with this world rather than the next and artists, often supported by lay patrons, composed works that concentrated on the human not the divine.

  12. 17, 18 AND 19 CENTURY • During the 18th century, the Enlightenment culminated in the French and American revolutions. •  At first, the monarchies of Europe embraced Enlightenment ideals, but with the French Revolution they feared losing their power and joined wide coalitions with the counter-revolution.

  13. MODERN • Modern history, also referred to as the modern period or the modern era, is the historio graphical approach to the timeframe after the post-classical era (known as the Middle Ages). Modern history can be further broken down into the early modern period and the late modern period after the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution. Contemporary history is the span of historic events that are immediately relevant to the present time. The modern era began approximately in the 16th century.
