  3. For most of you, your senior year likely focused on: • Planning your next steps after graduation • Meeting graduation requirements • Resume/Application building • Personal development (intellectually, socially and introspectively) SENIOR YEAR LOOKED LIKE…

  4. BUT NOW…. CONGRATS! YOU MADE IT THROUGH COLLEGE

  5. Now that you’re getting ready to finish school, it’s important that you begin planning for next year, especially, in these areas. • Post-grad planning and career focus • Developing your personal network • Resume/Application building • Job/Grad school opportunities • Life planning • Time management Preparing for Your Future

  6. Once you graduate from college, you are officially a responsible adult. • For some, this is the start of an exciting new phase of your life. For others, the anxiety of managing the pressures and responsibilities of life in the real world can be daunting. • There are a few options that most graduating seniors have after graduation. Remember that the competition for grad school programs and post-grad job opportunities is stiff. No matter how you choose to spend your time after you graduate, always be planning for the next phases of your life. The best opportunities generally come to those who are fully pushing themselves to be ready for the next steps. Heading into Your Future

  7. Go to the Career Counseling CenterA visit to the Career Counseling Center might help clarify what post-grad directions are available. Make an appointment to talk to a career counselor, discuss what types of careers are available and appealing to you given your academic performance and curriculum vitae. This might help you decide on post-grad directions. Focusing on Post-Grad Planning

  8. There are generally a few ways to find a job: • Personal network connections • Search engines/job listings ( i.e. Monster, Craigslist, school network) • Career center at your school Remember, that the current job market for graduating college students is very difficult. Every year a new class of graduating college students enters the job market for with a high demand for a very low supply of jobs. Finding a Job

  9. Professors can provide a lot more than academic support. Beyond providing assistance for coursework and advising you on choosing classes, they can open the doors to internships and give you guidance in planning for your post-college career. • Contact your professors, mentors and other people in your network: Be sure to communicate your career interests and job needs, particularly members of your network who are professionals in your field of interest. • Start with email or a phone call. Open the lines of communication with professionals, mentors and prospective mentors with a simple phone call or email. • Do your research. What kind of job are you looking for? What is your eventual career goal or position? Which companies/firms/professionals have a model or offer a pathway that can put you on track for your ideal position, • Keep and eye out and make yourself available for networking opportunities. Stay in touch with your school’s alumni association or stay posted about prospective companies’ meet and greets, mixers or events. •  Keep in touch. You never know who may come in handy for a job or networking opportunity. Always make sure to keep in contact with people who may be able to assist you later down the line. Building Your Network In the Field

  10. Get the “big picture.” Don’t just plan out the next year . Plan out a road map of checkpoints and goal for the next few years. • Put together a timeframe of goals and objectives leading up to major milestones and accomplishments that you’d like for yourself in the next few years • Schedule time commitments, deadlines and time to properly prepare for critical components of your life plan • Make a weekly and yearly schedule of deadlines based on your needs: • Just like you should have done in undergrad, keeping track of your time once you graduate is equally important. Time easily slips away from you if you do not carefully manage it. Failing to manage your time after you graduate has serious implications for your post graduation opportunities. Taking test prep courses, applying for scholarships, having a usable resume, getting letters of recommendation all have long range deadlines that can quickly creep up on you. You don’t want to have to scramble for critical pieces of your plan. Plan early, revisit often and regularly revise your schedule of deadlines so that you don’t lose track of your timeframe or impending obligations. Time Management
