Introduction • KOREN • Korea Advanced Research Network • A non-profit advanced research network • Funded by MIC (Ministry of Information and Communication) and KT since 1995 • To provide high-performance networking services • To supports the R&D activity of new technology and applications • 6+1 router nodes across the nation based upon ATM technology with advanced services deployed • 37 member Institutes

  5. History • 1st Phase (’95~’97) : ATM Service • Launched KOREN (95) • Built optical backbone between Seoul and Daejeon • 2nd Phase (’98~2001) : IP Service over ATM • Opened the Network Operation Center (NOC) • Interface with APII Testbed: JP/SG/US - Deployed 6 GigaPoP - Interfaced with other domestic R&D networks (HPCNet/KREONET2 (NOC:KISTI) • 3rd Phase (2002~2005) : Optical Internet based on DWDM • Backbone : Tens of Giga BPS • Access network : several Giga BPS

  7. Network Services • IPv4/ATM • provides IP over ATM service • Native IPv6 • Operates all nodes in dual stack of IPv4 and IPv6 • Serves as a gateway to overseas networks such as 6TAP • Provides IPv4/IPv6 DNS service • Multicast • Provides multicast routing service to KOREN users • QoS • Develops QoS-related application • Offers a testing and engineering environment • GRID - National GRID network backbone

  8. Member Institutes • Korea Meteorological Administration • Korea Information Security Agency • Kangwon National Univ. • Seoul National Univ. • Sungshin Women's Univ. • TTA • Game Society of Korea • KAIST (Seoul) • KIST (Seoul) • Hanyang Univ. • Korea Univ. • Sejong Univ. • Konkuk Univ. • Korea Health Industry Development Institute • Yonsei Medical Center • SK Telecom • Soongsil Univ. • Yonsei Univ. • I2soft • KT • Sungkyunkwan Univ • Korea Science Foundation • KISTI • Chungbuk National Univ. • KOREN-NOC • ETRI • Kumoh National Institute of Technology

  9. International R&D Networks( APII / TEIN )

  10. Network Connectivity • APII Testbed : Korea – Japan/Singapore/USA • TEIN : Asia – Europe

  12. APII Testbed • APII Testbed : Asia Pacific Information Infrastructure Testbed • Background • First proposed at the 12th APEC TEL WG(1995) jointly • by Korea and Japan • APII Cooperation Center was launched in Seoul, Korea • (Oct. 1996) • Objectives • To test interconnectivity and interoperability among the • test-beds in Asia-Pacific Region • To Support joint R&D Projects and Application • Developments

  13. APII Testbed • Korea operates three APII Testbeds • KR-JP APII Testbed • Started with 2Mbps in April 1998 • Expanded to 8Mbps in July 1999 • Will be expanded to 45Mbps or 155Mbps (2003) • KR-SG APII Testbed • 2Mbps cables deployed in late 1999 • Will be expanded to 4~8Mbps (2003) • KR-US APII Testbed/KREONet2 • 45Mbps link to STAR TAP in May 2001

  14. Joint Projects on APII (2002) • 692,000USD are invested, Since 2001

  15. About TEIN • TEIN : Trans-Eurasia Information Network • connects Asia and European research networks • History • Endorsed as a new project of ASEM in the 3rd summit meeting(2000.10) • Korea, EC and Singapore proposed it together • 2Mbps link was initially opened (2001.12) • Link between Korea(KOREN)-France(RENATER 2) • Current Bandwidth : SCR10Mbps / PCR 20Mbps (2002.3)

  16. TEIN Connectivity • European Countries connected to the TEIN • 30 countries and more than 3000 Research and Education Institutes are connected to TEIN via GEANT • Asian Countries (10 countries) Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Slovenia, Slovak Republic, United Kingdom China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan

  17. Joint R&D Project on TEIN (2002)

  18. Plan for Network • Bandwidth Upgrade (2003) • TEIN : 10Mbps → more than 45Mbps • KR-JP APII Testbed : 8Mbps → 64M~155Mbps • KR-SG APII Testbed : 2Mbps → 4M~8Mbps • New Link (2003) • KR-MY Link (45Mbps) • KR-China APII Testbed (4Mbps) • Make Intra-Asia Research Network Connectivity in the Asia region - Region-to-region network among EU, Asia, North America in the end
