  2. Freud’s first stage … • ORAL stage • Begins at birth through about age 1 or 1 ½. • Oral fixation

  3. Freud’s second stage … • ANAL STAGE • Begins about age 1 and lasts for about 2 years. • Toilet training … • Adulthood??

  4. Erikson’s first stage … • Basic trust vs. mistrust (oral) • Dependence on caregivers for basic needs. • If trust is built, then the baby can move to the next stage with ease.

  5. Erikson’s second stage … • Autonomy vs. shame and doubt (anal) • Toilet training • Independence • Successful autonomy eases the toddler’s move into Erikson’s third stage (Initiative vs. Guilt), about age 3.

  6. THE EMOTIONAL INFANT and TODDLER!!!!!! • I will show you pictures. You must guess what emotion is showing on that child’s face. • If there is a term that you need to know, watch for it to sneak in somewhere also. • OH MY!!

  7. Frightened.

  8. BASIC EMOTIONS • angry sad • happy fearful

  9. Depressed.

  10. Social smile ~2–3 months

  11. Surprised!

  12. Baby laughter – intentionally about 3—4 months

  13. ANGRY!!

  14. Stranger anxiety – starts about 6—8 months

  15. Happy!

  16. Social referencing – 6—8 months

  17. Sleepy…

  18. SELF-CONSCIOUS EMOTIONS: shame, embarrassment, guilt, pride, empathy, sympathy, etc. 18–24 months

  19. Empathetic/sympathetic/ wants other kid’s toy

  20. Separationanxietybeginning about 8—9 months

  21. Bored.

  22. Emotional Self-RegulationBabies may cry,suck, or sleep.Children cry or sleep or move away.Teenagers cry andmaybe scream. Andsleep. Also move away.HOW DO YOU SELF-REGULATE?

  23. Confident.

  24. Temperament: Stable individual differences in the quality and intensity of emotional reactions.

  25. Confused?

  26. Interactional synchrony:A sensitively tuned “emotional dance” in which the mother responds to the baby’s signals in a well-timed and appropriate manner.
