  2. What is a Lovespoon? • A wooden spoon carved to show that you loved someone! • If you wanted to marry them you would give them a lovespoon

  3. WHERE DID THEY COME FROM? • They first started this tradition all the way back in the 17th Century!! That’s the sixteen hundreds • It began as a plain spoon • But over time people started adding their own decorations and carvings to them to make them pretty and unique! This is much prettier!!

  4. The first lovespoon!! • The first lovespoon we have is from Wales • It is displayed in the St Fagans National History Museum and it is from all the way back in 1667, • THAT MEANS IT IS 346 YEARS OLD! This is it!

  5. Symbols • Lovespoons needed to be pretty and have lots of thought put into them. • So each symbol carved into them would have a different meaning:

  6. Anchor • Sailors used to carve them at sea for their girlfriends back home so they used to put anchors there to show what they worked as.

  7. Others are more obvious • Horseshoe is for luck • Hearts are for love • Bells are for marriage • Crosses were for faith • Wheels were to show support for your loved one • A lock was to show security
