    1. Grade 10 Introduction to Universities and Careers “Life after school and how to get there!” Thursday 10th March 2011

    2. The Big Questions Leaving school after Grade 10? IB or not IB? What IB subjects should I be choosing? If no diploma, what are my options? What if I have absolutely no clue what I want do after school? Who is this guy standing in front of the class and just what does he do?

    3. Leaving School After Grade 10 The Realschulabschluss requires five Cs or more in IGCSE. They are: Courtesy, Commitment, Cooperation, Consideration, Caring Sorry . . . They are in English Language, German, History, Maths and Combined Sciences The Bildungsagentur Dresden will then convert the IGCSE into a Realschulabschl.

    4. What the Realschulabschluss enables: An apprenticeship (Lehre/Ausbildung) Entrance to vocational colleges (Fachoberschule, Berufl. Gymnasium) Eventual possibilities for study at a technical university (Fachhochschule) More information from the Arbeitsagentur (www.arbeitsagentur.de)

    5. Staying on to do the IB The IB is recognised as university entrance qualification in many countries LIS focuses on the US, British and German university systems The Bildungsagentur will convert IB to HZB (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung), the permission to study in Germany BUT!

    6. IB Requirements for HZB A foreign language at A A HL science or maths Three HL and three SL subjects The IB diploma, certificates not acceptable Not maths studies

    7. How do I choose my IB subjects? Make your strong subjects Higher Level (check IGCSE results) Make sure your A1 choice is in your strongest language Tailor your career choice and subject choice to your strengths (more anon) BE REALISTIC!!!

    8. Some examples Medicine Chemistry HL, Biology HL, Lang. A1 HL Business (All Variations) History HL, Language A1 HL, Maths HL Law Language A1 HL, Language A2 HL, Hist. HL Engineering Physics HL, Chemistry HL, Maths HL

    9. Some caveats Many university courses have very high entry requirements E.g.: Medicine (min. 38 IB points and 1.7 Abitur NC) German universities only care about NC so choose subjects that will maximise IB points at HL Talk to and LISTEN to your teachers

    10. I am, like, sooo totally clueless, dude! Total bummer Seek advice from parents, teachers & friends Take a careers test (eg. Stamford Test on www.ucas.ac.uk) Make an appointment for careers advice at the Arbeitsagentur Be guided by academic strengths and/or favourite subjects Check out the guides, brochures and information in Room 410 Check out www.lis-careers.com Talk to me (by appointment only)

    11. The three systems: a brief overview Country When How Requirements UK September 2012 Through UCAS: five choices (four for medical sciences) Personal statement, reference, predicted grades

    12. The three systems: a brief overview Country When How Requirements USA November 2012 Individual applications to universities Recommendations, SATs, transcripts, LOADS OF MONEY!

    13. The three systems: a brief overview Country When How Requirements Germany April – July 2013 Individual applications (except medical sciences = ZVS) IB diploma, HZB, BUREAUCRACY

    14. What about IB certificates ? No possibility for study in Germany (although entrance exams are making an appearance) but SATs in connection with an accredited HSD is an option to getting Abitur Many UK universities only want a number of IB points (not necessarily diploma) US universities are often happy with SATs and GPA transcripts Private universities often less fixed on qualifications Study later (many universities like “life experience”)

    15. Please allow me to introduce myself (I’m a man of wealth and taste) University admissions coordinator Assist you in choosing your career path Supervise application process for Germany, the USA, UK & Holland Keep you real, man! Fulfil school’s obligations in the application process BUT NOT THE NANNY
