  1. BANKSY

  2. First things first... Do any of you know who Banksy is?

  3. He is... • A Street Artist – this means he does art in the street. This includes GRAFFITI. • Probably not really called Banksy. This name is a pseudonym (alias/fake name). • Very important to Britain’s modern culture. • Most importantly, THE PUBLIC DO NOT KNOW WHO HE REALLY IS.

  4. His Work • The majority of Banksy’s most well known pieces are outside. • His work nearly always has some sort of political, social or moral message. • He often sneaks into important places to spray-paint or create art. • His work is SATIRICAL. This means it makes fun of something serious within society.

  5. His Style • Banksy uses stencils to produce his graffiti. • He often uses other pieces of graffiti as a foundation, adding his own work on top. • “I use whatever it takes. Sometimes that just means drawing a moustache on a girl's face on some billboard, sometimes that means sweating for days over an intricate drawing. Efficiency is the key.”

  6. Politics and Society • “We can’t do anything to change the world until capitalism crumbles. In the meantime we should all go shopping to console ourselves.” • Banksy’s work has had many themes. Here are a few: anti-war, anti-capitalism, anti-fascism and anti-imperialism. There are many more. • He has also criticised aspects of the human condition through is work, such as: greed, poverty, hypocrisy and boredom.

  7. Inside Work • Some of Banksy’s work was not done on the street, although they still maintain the same sort of style. • Yet again, they are often satirical, and have a message which is important to him.

  8. Film • Banksy has also made a film. It is called ‘Exit through the Gift Shop’, and is a documentary about street art. • We are going to watch the trailer so that you have an idea of what it is about.

  9. What is your opinion? • What do you think about Graffiti? And Street Art in general? • Do you think it can be counted as art? • Do you think it should be illegal? • Can you think of any street art/graffiti you have seen that you really liked? • Is there any graffiti in Huesca that you can think of?

  10. The Berlin Wall • The remainder of the Berlin Wall has since become a testament to the struggle that Berlin suffered. • The remains are covered in graffiti and paintings. • It shows that graffiti can have an artistic, social and political importance.

  11. Your Turn. • You are going to come up with your own idea for some street art. • You need a motive; it could be political, it could be social or it could just be to make fun of a friend. • You need a location; Where would it be? What city? What building? • You need a tag; this is your graffiti signature. • YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DRAW IT IF YOU DON’T WANT TO... EITHER WAY, YOU HAVE TO ABOUT WRITE IT.
