Fractured Fairy Tales What Makes a Story a Fairy Tale? • Fairy tales nearly always begin with the words Once upon a time or Long, long ago. • They usually have a good character and an evil character. • They might involve magic or enchantment. • A woodland/forest or castle is usually mentioned. • There is always a problem, that is eventually solved and the good characters live happily ever after.

You will need to consider the • following points: • Changing the setting. • Changing the personalities of your characters. • Writing the tale from the another character’s view point. • Changing the problem. • Changing the solution. • Adding a little humour. • Writing a different ending.

  11. Criteria • Must be true to form • You may alter the storyline • You may add an unexpected twist • Create a contemporary • (modern) version • Elements of a novel must be present

  12. Steps • Select a fairy tale from the list. • Read the original version. • Identify elements of a novel. • Think of ideas for the new story. • Write your fractured fairy tale. • Use word processor for final copy.
