  1. Film Review/Critique

  2. “The role of the critic is to help people see what is in the work, what is in it that shouldn’t be, what is not in it that could be. He is a good critic if he helps people understand more about the work than they couple see for themselves; he is a great critic, if by his understanding and feeling for the work, by his passion, he can excite people so that they want to experience more of the art that is there, waiting to be seized.” – Pauline Kael, American film critic for The New Yorker from 1968 to 1991.

  3. The Four Functions of Film Reviewing • Film reviewing can act as: • Journalism • Advertising • Criticism • Rhetoric (writing)

  4. Film Review as Journalism • Presents to the reader news on the latest film releases and significant aspects of a particular film. • Two types: • journalism of opinion – journalist presents a carefully thought-out position, backed up with a set of arguments and background information • journalism of taste – journalist presents a simple evaluation of the film

  5. Film Review as Advertising • publicizes the film and encourages its readers to go to the cinema. • can be seen as a service industry

  6. Film Review as Criticism • involves the description, analysis, and evaluation of films.

  7. Film Review as Rhetoric • essays that are read for their own intrinsic literary merits, which may lead to them being republished in a single authored anthology.

  8. The Four Components of Film Reviewing • a condensed plot synopsis (description of the film’s plot) • background information (includes genre, stars, director, anecdotes about the film’s production and reception, etc.) • a set of abbreviated arguments about the film (the reviewer’s analysis and comments on the film) • an evaluation (recommendation to see or not see the film – backed up by the reviewer’s arguments)

  9. Evaluation • What are reviewers looking for when they evaluate a film? Reviewers are looking for some, or all, of the following: • The motivation of what happens in a film • Entertainment value • Social value
