Differentiated Instruction • Utilize problem of the day to target secondary benchmark with whole class if needed. • Teacher-led center should be used to target weak benchmarks. • Computer software (e.g., Destination Math, HMH Mega Math, Florida Online Intervention) can be used to target student specific needs. • Assessments and tasks can be adjusted to meet student specific academic needs. • Utilize anchor papers/tasks to increase student achievement in levels 4 and 5.

Cognitive Complexity • Cognitive complexity refers to the cognitive demand associated with an item. • Beginning in 2004, the DOE implemented a new cognitive classification system based upon Dr. Norman L. Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK) levels. • The rationale for classifying an item by its DOK level of complexity focuses on the expectations made of the item, not on the ability of the student. • The cognitive complexity of an item depends on the grade level of the assessment; an item that has a high level of cognitive complexity at one grade may not be as complex at a higher grade.   17. Cognitive Complexity Levels The categories—low complexity, moderate complexity, and high complexity—form an ordered description of the demands an item may make on a student. For example, low-complexity items may require a student to solve a one-step problem. Moderate-complexity items may require multiple steps. News • New FIU Graduate Certificates in Mathematics and Science Education for K-5 Teachers (WB # 13341) • In Summary: • Partnership of Florida International University's College of Education and Miami-Dade County Public Schools. • Goals – to enhance the content knowledge of grades K-5 teachers instructing students in Mathematics or Science • Certificate Program – enroll in 5 courses (15 graduate credits) • Completion Period – over 3 semesters beginning in Summer 2013, including coursework and collaborative practice-oriented experiences completed at their schools • Who is eligible? 30 M-DCPS full time teachers currently assigned to grades K-5 will be selected to complete the certificate program at the Masters level in either Mathematics or Science
