  1. Tanzanite Facts • Tanzanite was first discovered in 1967 in Tanzania. • It is a rich blue variety of Zoisite. • Tanzanite is only mined in Tanzania. • The largest rough tanzanite was found in 2020. • The largest carved tanzanite is named ‘L’heure Bleu’. • Tanzanite is a birthstone for December. • The gemstone is believed to inspire calmness, compassion, and new life. • Tanzanite is rarer than diamonds. • There are many theories as to who first discovered tanzanite. • Tanzanite has a trichroism which makes it unusual.

  2. How To Choose The Best Tanzanite One can choose the best tanzanite by using the 5 C’s criteria. 5 C’s are: • Color • Clarity • Cut • Weight • Confidence

  3. Which Color • Tanzanite is unique in that it changes colors depending on the light. • It’s bluer under fluorescent light and more violet under incandescent light, and you can also see shades of red and brown in it. • A high-quality tanzanite stone should be deep blue/dark violet. • Stones that have a light color are considered low quality. • You should keep in mind that the color of almost all tanzanite available is a result of heat treatment. • This is why it is not recommended to clean this stone with ultrasonic or steam cleaners.

  4. Clarity • Tanzanite can be flawless or it can be heavily included. • Its quality and value is profoundly affected by its clarity grade. • Hence, it is very important to understand the different terms in use in the industry and which inclusions you may find in Tanzanite. • The image above shows a common inclusions found in the gem type - a "fingerprint" liquid inclusion. • Generally speaking, Tanzanite needs to be flawless to be considered top grade as it is classed as a Type 1 gemstone by the GIA.

  5. Tanzanite Cut • Whereas the actual shape of a Tanzanite has little impact on its value, the quality of the cut itself is very important. • It is an area which is often overlooked in this age of catalog websites which sell huge quantities of medium grades cut in the cutting houses of India. • These cutting houses generally use a myriad of weight saving techniques when cutting which can increase the finished weight of a Tanzanite by up to 30%. • This means the actual hidden cost of a Tanzanite can be vastly greater than you realize.

  6. Tanzanite Weight • This is the last of the 4 C’s and the one with the least impact on quality. • A carat is a unit of weight measurement and is in fact 1/5 of a gram. • Carat weight becomes important within quality brackets. • A 3 carat exceptional, investment grade color with top clarity will of course always be much rarer and more valuable than a 10 carat B grade color containing inclusions. • Some gem minerals are very dense like Sapphire and Ruby and others are not, like Diamond and Aquamarine. • To judge the size of a stone, always use the dimensions, particularly the face up dimensions to judge size. • We include a useful Gem Dimension Chart on all our gem pages to help with this.

  7. Confidance The fifth C refers to confidence. Tanzanite which is certified by the mark of rarity tag by the Tanzanite Foundation is your guarantee of ethical and socially responsible gemstone sourcing. This mark can only be distributed by the Tanzanite Foundation, formed by the tanzanite one-the worlds largest mines of Tanzanite

  8. Tanzanite is a birthstone for Tanzanite was a birthstone for December by the American Gem Trade Association in 2002It was the first alteration made to the list since 1912. This Emphasizes how new tanzanite is with the gemstone industry.

  9. Variation of Tanzanite • The mineral zoisite naturally occurs in a wide range of colors that include colorless, gray, yellow, brown, pink, green, blue, and violet. • The name "tanzanite" is used for a color variety of zoisite that ranges from blue, through violet, to violetish purple.

  10. BONDI BLUE TANZANITE • Bondi blue tanzanite is one of the rarest varieties of this treasured gemstone with mixed shades of blue and green. • Tanzanite's incredible rarity and beauty have skyrocketed it to the highest ranks of the gemstone kingdom. • Named after the sea-blue color seen on the beautiful Bondi Beach in Australia this exotic gemstone displays the revered deep blues of tanzanite tinged with rich green. • It exhibits a strong amount of pleochroism meaning that it appears different colors when viewed from different angles.

  11. Tanzanite Manufacturing Process 1. Rough Tanzanite From ZoisiteMineral In its Rough form, tanzanite is extracted from blue zoisite mineral. This mineral occurs in only one country in all world- Tanzania, in the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro. 2. Planning & Marking Tanzanite The most crucial task in the creation of the perfect Tanzanite gemstone, this is where tanzanite nurtured at the hands of a skilled craftsman or a jeweler. The professional plans and decides, in consultation with the concerned owners, the cut, weight and carat of a precious gemstone. Tanzanite will then determine its market value. 3. Making Of Pre-Form Making of Pre-form is a simple process by which a rough tanzanite divided into desired marked pieces. This marking is the done perpendicularly or against the planes that the tanzanite rough needs to be the sawn i.e. 'cut.‘ 4. Bruting In the process of Bruting, Tanzanite’s girdle is formed. It is called rounding. The girdle is the surface which created around the thickest part of the stone. 5.Polishing This step makes the tanzanite into a Faceted pieces. The last steps in the manufacturing process of the tanzanite from where on it goes to the grading department.

  12. Story • Tanzanite is the blue and violet variety of the mineral zoisite, caused by small amounts of vanadium. • Tanzanite belongs to the epidote mineral group. • Tanzanite is only found in Tanzania, in a very small mining area near the Mererani Hills. • Tanzanite is noted for its remarkably strong trichrorism, appearing alternately blue, violet and burgundy depending on crystal orientation. • Tanzanite can also appear differently when viewed under different lighting conditions. • The blues appear more evident when subjected to fluorescent light and the violet hues can be seen readily when viewed under incandescent illumination. • In its rough state tanzanite is colored a reddish brown to clear, and it requires heat treatment to remove the brownish "veil" and bring out the blue violet of the stone. • The gemstone was given the name 'tanzanite' by Tiffany & Co. after Tanzania, the country in which it was discovered. • The scientific name of "blue-violet zoisite" was not thought to be sufficiently consumer friendly by Tiffany's marketing department, who introduced it to the market in 1968. • In 2002, the American Gem Trade Associationchose tanzanite as a December birthstone, the first change to their birthstone list since 1912.
