Insect Bites & Stings – Introduction What is Insect bites and stings? • Bites and stings from insects, such as bees, flies, ticks, and mosquitoes, are generally mild in nature and may not cause any adverse reactions. • However, they can transmit illnesses such as malaria and Lyme disease, which can lead to a reddening, swelling, pain, and itching of the skin.
Insect Bites & Stings – Symptoms Signs and symptoms of a severe reaction include:- • The onset of a serious reaction can be accompanied by a range of symptoms, including nausea, facial swelling, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, deterioration of blood pressure, and shock. • Bee, wasp, hornet, yellow jacket, and fire ant bites are the most common causes of reactions, while mosquito, tick, fly, ant, and spider bites can also lead to severe reactions. • In rare cases, some insects may also transmit disease, including West Nile virus and Lyme disease.
Insect Bites & Stings – Action to be taken For mild reactions • To prevent further stings: · Remove the stinger (especially if it’s stuck in the skin). • This will prevent more venom from entering the body. · Wash the affected area (especially if the stinger is embedded in the skin) with soap and/or water. • “Apply a cold pack/cloth filled with ice” to reduce the pain and swelling of the area affected by the stinger. • Try a pain reliever (i.e., Ibuprofen, Motrin or Tylenol) to relieve the pain of bites/stings. • " Applying a topical cream" to relieve the pain and itch of the area affected. This may help control the pain. • Other topical creams (e.g., Calamine lotion, Colloidal Oatmeal or Baking Soda) may also help relieve the itching of the area. Take antihistamines (e.g. Benadryl (for example, Benadryl), Diphenhydramine
Insect Bites & Stings – Action to be taken Severe reactions affect more than just the site of the insect bite and may progress rapidly. Call emergency medical assistance if the following signs or symptoms occur: • Breathing problems • Lips or throat swelling • Fainting • Head and neck dizziness • Confusion • Rapid heart rate
Insect Bites & Stings – Action to be taken Take these actions immediately while waiting with an affected person for medical help :- • Look for any medications the person may be carrying to help with an allergic reaction, like an epinephrine autoinjector like an EpiPen or Twinject. • Give the drug as directed - usually by pressing it against the thigh and holding it there for a few seconds. • Give the injection site a massage for 10 seconds to make sure it's fully absorbed. Take off any tight clothes and wrap the person in a blanket. • Do not give them anything to eat or drink. If they vomit or bleed from the mouth, turn them over so they don't suffocate. • If they don't have any signs of breathing, coughing, or movement, start CPR. If your doctor has prescribed epinephrine, make sure you read the instructions before anything happens and have your family read them too.
