  2. Description Sheep were one of the first animals to be domesticated 10,000 years ago and came from the mountains of central Asia. The wild sheep did not resemble domestic sheep in any significant way. They were much larger than the majority of domestic sheep that are kept today and had coarse hair instead of wool. Domestic sheep gradually developed from their wild ancestors. Their coarse hair was replaced by soft wool after many generations. In the beginning, sheep were bred for milk and hides, not meat or wool, as they are today. In the last 200 years, sheep have only become significant as meat animals. Additionally, they were occasionally used as pack animals. Domestic sheep are currently raised worldwide.Cautious reproducing determination over hundreds of years has brought about in excess of 800 distinct types of sheep around the world, 52 of these varieties are available in Canada. The wool type, flocking instinct, physical characteristics, meat production, and other economically significant characteristics of these breeds vary. There are thirteen times as many sheep as people in Australia, the world's leading sheep-raising nation. The first sheep were brought to Canada in 1664.45 sheep had been brought from France by 1667 to the area that is now known as Quebec. In the year 1671, there were 407 sheep in the region that is now Nova Scotia. Western Canada did not receive sheep until about the middle of the 19th century.1
