Description PROJECT GOAL:To demonstrate the feasibility of using aircraft as http server-based secure nodes on the SWIM network for 2 way information exchange • Borrows from proven DOD SIPRNET, popular web applications in a secure, federated http “FIPRNET” approach • Allows for fast-track testing and deployment of cockpit tools and new business support models in NextGen • CRDA efforts at WJHTC, initial applications in weather and aircraft support maintenance

Major Milestones/Goals • Demonstrate secure http-based capability for an aircraft as a node in NextGen SWIM • Micro-webserver test system with cellular, satellite • Ground, mobile lab and airborne testing • Application testing, including wireless cockpit devices, RFID, cargo threat detection, other • SIPRNET-like encryption & testing of data network • UAV-airliner-ground weather probe data links
Accomplishments To Date FEB 08 - Initial idea to adapt maintenance airborne micro-webserver for weather data applications conceived (NGATS WX Workshop, L’Enfant Plaza) JUN 08 - D Loda appointed to JPDO NCO WG through NextGen Institute. Monthly participation to present day. MAY-SEP 08 - Planning meetings with FAA WX Office, NASA LaRC, FAA WJHTC SEP 2008 - Research started by NCPS, supported by NASA LaRC NOV 2008 - CRDA between FAA WJHTC, FAA Weather Office, NCPS Research signed
Accomplishments To Date NOV 2008 - NCPS SWIMLINK prototype system installed on removable shelf in FAA aircraft. WLAN onboard, ground cellular web data link established with FAA WJHTC Weather Lab using onboard environmental data. Initial LaRC support concluded DEC 2008/FEB 2009 - GPS/Iridium antenna conflicts, aircraft maintenance cycle puts project on hold. MAR-APR 2009 - Aircraft antenna upgrades completed, additional ramp tests with Iridium satellite system JUN 2009 - Project put on back burner to await further evolution/maturation of NCO architecture, airborne cellular and satellite communications networks, and application technologies
Accomplishments To Date JUL 2009 - MAR 2010 - New NCO architectural concepts evolved, SWIMLINK/FIPRNET approach fleshed out in related JPDO, WJHTC, and LaRC efforts APR 2010 - Restarted project activity. Arrangement with AirCell to test new GoGo airborne cellular network with SWIMLINK prototype server system. Initiated development of mobile test lab as aircraft surrogate to support continued testing, AirCell installation, and to reduce risk/ramp time for testing with actual aircraft MAY 2010 - Nearing completion of network centric mobile test lab and installation of AirCell, Iridium, WLAN, cellular, etc. communications with revised FAA rack mounting hardware and 110VAC, 12VDC and 28VDC aircraft type power. New cockpit devices and applications testing. Back area doubles as mobile UAV hanger for next phase.
Future Plans • Utilize mobile network centric lab prior to FAA aircraft flight testing for: • Communications testing • Airborne Cellular, Iridium, ground cellular, WLAN, other • Encryption testing for SIPRNET-like capability to FAA Weather Lab, SWIM test networks as applicable • Future applications to demonstrate a secure HTTP based FIPRNET concept • Non Flight-critical COTS Applications Testing • Weather, aircraft support, GPS-based ADS-B backup, other • UAV data link testing
