That’s why it’s important to first assess the environment the compressor will be installed in, particularly if the area is very dusty. Determining the Right Air Quality for Your Compressed Air System
Contaminants come from the atmosphere. The atmosphere actually contains a lot of dirt particles, moisture in terms of humidity and also hydrocarbon in terms of oil. Compressor ingests atmospheric air, so it actually compresses inside a compression chamber mixes it in before you actually discharge it into the system downstream. A typical example is that when you actually using a 7 bar compressor air system, your compressor is actually ingesting 8 times the atmospheric volume. So in theory what you're looking at is actually 8 times the contaminants of dirt moisture and hydrocarbons within that compressor air system and the discharge downstream to your application. The installation environment plays a big part. So for example, if the environment is very dusty, very close to a chemical production area or storage area, you can actually ingest a lot of different type of contaminants. So that’s the hydrocarbon and dirt that we actually mentioned earlier. Installing your system correctly with the right filtration will help you produce the right quality of compressed air. At the end of the day, it’s what is the maximum or minimum level that your application can accept. So that is very important. So you've got to determine that first. One helpful way is to
actually refer to the ISO 8573.1 quality requirement. So that's the international standard that governs the compressed air quality. So the ISO 8573.1 international compressed air standard classifies the compressed air in terms of three categories. First one is solid particle, second is water, third one is oil. Depending on the application. It is best looking at it from the point of use in terms of dryness contaminant level so that you can determine your actual needs. So for instance, if the compressed air is making contact with the actual product or application, it is best that a high grade of compressed air is actually selected.
