It was formally recognized by the parliamentary act of NIT 2002; therefore, it is also a deemed university by the act. 5. HISTORY Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat (SVNIT) was previously known as Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering and Technology. The name was changed to SVNIT in the year 2002. SVNIT was established in the year 1961 jointly by the Government of India and by the state government of Gujrat. The Institute was first set up as a Regional Engineering College (REC), which later transformed into a National Institute of Technology (NIT) in late 2002. Furthermore, the college received the status of Deemed University in the sameyear. Throughout its years of operation, the Institute has started different courses from time to time. However, the first UG level course was available by the University in the year 1983, almost twenty-two years after its formation.
