  3. 01 THE REVERSIBLE FUEL CELL A reversible fuel cell is a type of fuel cell that can operate in both fuel cell mode and electrolysis mode. It is designed to produce electricity through a chemical reaction when hydrogen and oxygen are supplied to the cell, and it can also convert electrical energy into chemical energy by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen gases. In electrolysis mode, the reversible fuel cell operates in reverse. An electrical current is supplied to the cell, which causes the electrolyte to split water into hydrogen and oxygen gases. The hydrogen is collected at the cathode, while the oxygen is released at the anode. The hydrogen gas can then be stored and used as a fuel source.

  4. 02 IN FUEL CELL MODE In fuel cell mode, the reversible fuel cell functions like a conventional fuel cell. Hydrogen gas is supplied to the anode (negative electrode), and oxygen or air is supplied to the cathode (positive electrode). At the anode, hydrogen molecules are split into protons ?H?? and electrons (e^-). The protons pass through the electrolyte while the electrons travel through an external circuit, generating an electrical current. At the cathode, oxygen molecules react with the protons and electrons, combining to form water.
