Breast Cancer • Breast cancer is cancer that forms in the cells of the breast. • It can occur in both men and women, but it's far more common in women. • It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women after lung cancer. • Breast cancer survival rates are rising, as screening and treatment are improving.
Types Of Breast Cancer Surgeries • Surgery: the surgical therapies for breast cancer can be divided into breast-conserving surgery and mastectomy. • Lumpectomy (Breast-Conserving): Lumpectomy is surgery to remove a breast tumor and some of the surrounding tissue • Mastectomy (Breast Removal): Mastectomy removes the entire breast, either to treat breast cancer or to prevent it in high-risk individuals.

Pre Operative Care • Generally Include: A blood test, a chest x-ray, and possibly an electrocardiogram. • Medications: Medications that "thin" the blood ( including aspirin) should be discontinued several days prior to a scheduled operation. • PATIENTS MUST REFRAIN FROM EATING OR DRINKING at least 8 hours prior to surgery. • You MUST have someone drive you home.
Post Operative Care • You may take a shower the day after your surgery • Please remove the dressing 48 hours after surgery with Doctor’s advice. • Steri-strips should stay on for 2 weeks over your breast incision • Do not lift anything heavy (more than 10 pounds • If you are taking prescribed pain medication, drink plenty of fluids as they can cause constipation.
