  3. What is an Artificial Satellite ? What is an Artificial Satellite ? An artificial object that is manufactured by humans and launched into the Earth’s orbit or in another planet’s orbit. Revolves around the planets and provide all the information about the planet through satellite imagery. Purpose of launching artificial satellites is to study the planet and communicate relevant information back to the scientists studying it. The Artificial satellite is a device placed in orbit around any planet or natural satellite. These are formed by nature. These are man made. They are the objects that orbit the earth. These are used and controlled by the astronomers and are used upto their will. They are made up of natural material such as rock, minerals, water, dust etc. They are made up of metal and electronics material. They are normally massive enough to stay in orbit under the influence of gravity indefinitely. They are not normally massive enough to stay in orbit under the influence of gravity indefinitely. They cannot communicate on earth or with other planets. They can communicate with instruments on earth. E.g.- Moon, Jupiter, etc. E.g.- Sputnik I, Aryabhata, etc. 4

Satellite TV- Higher altitude means higher coverage. Satellite Phones and phone calls -some of those go through satellite. Mapping services- All the surface photos are taken by satellites. Benefits and uses of Artificial Satellites Benefits and uses of Artificial Satellites • Artificial satellites are used to study the Earth, other planets, to help us communicate, and even to observe the distant Universe. Satellites can even have people in them, like the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle.
