    1. Coastal vs. Plateau Native Americans

    3. Impacts of Climate Types of Food Availability of Food Clothing Shelter Movement of Tribe Size of Tribe

    4. Coastal Tribes: Location Located West of the Cascade Mountains They lived in permanent housing Why do you think this is? Reliable Sources of Food (Fish/Berries were always available) Temperate Weather (Heat or Cold did not force migration)

    5. Coastal Tribes: Tribal Units Tribes were typically smaller on the Coast. They needed less people to work because of an abundance of resources.

    6. Coastal: Tribal Structure

    7. Coastal: Clothing In the Summers they would wear less clothing. In the Winters they would wear more protective clothing. They would use the materials around them: Cedar Bark, cattails, grass,

    8. Coastal: Diet The Coastal Tribes ate the following: Fish, Berries, whale, seal, clams, otter, elk, deer, bear The availability of these foods allowed Tribes to be permanent.

    9. Plateau Tribes: Location Plateau Tribes were more Nomadic because of the more extreme heat and cold of the seasons. They would frequently move according to season and sources of food. Ex. When Salmon went up stream they would migrate towards rivers.

    10. Plateau Tribes: Location/Tribal Units Because of the Constant movement for survival, tribes were larger. More people for hunting and gathering. Also more people to fight wars over territory.

    11. Plateau: Social Structure

    12. Plateau: Clothing More decorative clothing Animal Skins were used more frequently. In the Summer they wore clothing that was light and good for the heat. In the winter they wore heavier fur pelts and animal skins.

    13. Plateau: Diet Plateau Tribes typically moved around according to food availability. They followed herd of Elk, Deer. Also followed Salmon spawning runs on rivers. They would also gathered berries, nuts, and seeds.
