  1. Questions and Answers 1. Define educational technology?(2) 2. Mention the advantages of e-mail?(2) 3. Differentiate between the terms Internet and web?(2) 4. Explain hardware and software approach to education?(2) 5. What is Computer Assisted Instruction?(2) 6. What is communication? Represent a communication cycle and explain its components? (5) 1. Educational technology is a concept of transforming the traditional book teaching and learning to digital form. According to Leith educational technology is the systematic application of scientific knowledge about teaching-learning and conditions of learning to improve the efficiency of teaching and learning. Electronic and mechanical gadgets can be used for educational requirements. It helped to create interest and creativity in children and increase their memory. 2. Electronic mail (email or e-mail) is a method of exchanging messages ("mail") between people using electronic devices. Invented by Ray Tomlinson. It is easy to use. Once your account is set up, composing, sending and receiving messages is simple. Also, email allows for the easy and quick access of information and contacts. Email is paperless so that it is eco- friendly. Email is accessible from anywhere, as long as you have an internet connection. 3. The Internet is a global network of networks while the Web, also referred formally as World Wide Web (www) is collection of information which is accessed via the Internet. The internet is actually a huge network that is

  2. accessible to everyone & everywhere across the world. The Internet & the World Wide Web (the Web), though used interchangeably, are not synonymous. Internet is the hardware part - it is a collection of computer networks connected through either copper wires, fibre optic cables or wireless connections whereas, the World Wide Web can be termed as the software part – it is a collection of web pages connected through hyperlinks and URLs. In short, the World Wide Web is one of the services provided by the Internet. Internet is governed by the Internet Protocol – specifically dealing with data as whole and their transmission in packets, the World Wide Web is governed by the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) that deals with the linking of files, documents and other resources of the World Wide Web. 4. Educational technology I or hardware approach This type of educational technology has its origin in physical sciences and engineering and it is based on the concept of service, i.e., using technology in education (Silverman 1968). While teaching in a big hall, a teacher uses a microphone for making his teaching effective. The material and equipment in other areas are borrowed and utilized for educational purposes in hardware approach. Educational Technology II or software approach Psychology of learning brings the desirable behavioural changes in the students and thus lays down definite instructional procedure, teaching behaviour and behaviour modification devices. The second type of educational technology is sometimes referred to as instructional technology, teaching technology or behavioural technology. This type of technology tries to adopt a process-oriented technique for production of suitable teaching-learning

  3. material, techniques. Educational technology develops and utilizes software and, that is why, it is referred to as the software approach. Programmed material and teaching-learning strategies based on psychology of learning are usually known as software and the equipment and gadgets are called hardware. 5. CAI is a self-learning technique, usually offline or online, involving interaction of the students with programmed instructional materials. Computer Assisted Instruction is an interactive instructional technique whereby a computer is used to present the instructional material and monitor the learning that takes place. It uses a combination of text, graphics, sound and video in enhancing the learning process. It refers to the use of the computer as a tool to facilitate and improve instruction. CAI programs use tutorials, drill and practice, simulation, and problem solving approaches to present topics, and they test the student's understanding. 6. The word communication has been derived from the Latin word "communis" which means common. Hence communication is having common experiences with other people. Communication can be defined as the process through which two or more persons come to exchange ideas and understanding among themselves. According to Keith Davis communication is the process of passing information and understanding from one person to another. Communication process involves at least two persons, a sender and a receiver. The sender is called "communicator" and the receiver of the message is known as "communicate". teaching-learning strategies, and evaluating

  4. In communication message is the must. A message is the subject-matter of communication. SENDER (TEACHER) FEEDBACK MESSAGE COMMUNICATION CYCLE DECODING ENCODING RRECEIVER (STUDENT) CHANNEL Sender is the source of communication. All communication requires a source or sender. Sender has some idea, thought, need, or information that he wishes to transmit to another person. The sender uses certain symbols such as words, actions, pictures etc. (or) the ideas are translated into a code (or) a set of symbols especially in the form of language.

  5. The conversion of the subject matter into these symbols is the process of encoding. For example, radio, technology, letter, face to face talk, depending upon the situation of the two parties namely sender and receiver. It is the link that connects the sender and the receiver. A person who receives and interprets the message is called receiver. Decoding means translating the message into words for the purpose of understanding. Feedback refers to the reaction, reply or the response sent by the receiver to the sender. Or it is the response the receiver gives to the sender as a result of sender’s message. These symbols are transmitted through certain channels.
