  6. This Week CENN Highlights • Psychological Services in Education Program, (Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems) PSE

  7. PSE Mission • Mission of the Psychological Services in Education Program is to prepare professionals who will enable and enhance academic, social, emotional, and vocational capabilities of children, adolescents, and adults in school, community, and work settings.

  8. Commitment to Multiculturalism • The Psychological Services in Education Program is committed to a multicultural education environment. • The Program offers a required multicultural counseling course. • Faculty strive to have a multicultural counseling component in every required counseling psychology course.

  9. Program Profile • 9 nationally and internationally recognized faculty members • 42 PhD candidates and 75 MS/EdS students (as of Fall 2005) • MS/EdS in Mental Health, Career Counseling, and School Psychology • Combined PhD Program in Counseling Psychology and School Psychology

  10. Credits and Requirements • Combination of academic studies and practical experiences. • MS/EdS—72 credit hours within 5 semesters • PhD—4 years of coursework beyond Master’s degree and 1 year of predoctoral internship

  11. Practical Experience • A.L.E.C. counseling • Assisting in the Center for the Study of Technology in Counseling and Career Development (the Tech Center) • Working in Service Centers to offer assistance to Tallahassee community and public schools.

  12. 100% Success • MS/PhD students: • 90% graduation rate • 100% placement rate within 3 months upon graduation • PhD students: • 75% graduation rate • 100% placement rate upon graduation

Potential Career Paths (MS) • MS/EdS program in Mental Health Counseling: • Licensed Mental Health Counselors in Florida • MS/EdS program in School Counseling: • Certified School Counselors in Florida • MS/EdS program in Career Counseling: • National Certified Counselors • MS/EdS program in School Psychology: • Certified School Psychologists or Licensed School Psychologists in Florida

  14. With PhD in Hand • The Combined Doctoral Program in Counseling Psychology and School Psychology prepares individuals for leadership positions in academic and applied settings. • The doctoral program prepares graduates to become Licensed Psychologists in Florida and other states.

  15. Accreditation (MS/EdS) • The MS/EdS programs in Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, and Career Counseling are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

  16. Accreditation (PhD) • The Combined Doctoral Program in Counseling Psychology and School Psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). • PhD Program is a member of the Consortium of Combined-Integrated Doctoral Programs in Psychology (CCIDIP).

  17. A.L.E.C. • The Adult Learning Evaluation Center is a not-for profit assessment center under the administration of the EPLS Department (214 STB, 644-3611)

  18. A.L.E.C. Services • Psycho-educational Evaluations: To determine the presence of a learning disability and provide appropriate recommendations. • Anxiety Reduction Workshop: Group and individual training for individuals with test anxiety. • ADHD Evaluations: To determine the presence of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that may be adversely affecting academic, occupational, or social functioning. • ADHD Coaching: One-on One coaching for individuals with ADHD or ADHD-like symptoms. • Study Skills Workshop: An 8-week workshop that focuses on topics such as test preparation, motivation, and time management. Open to all college students.

Dr. Gary Peterson • Coordinator of the Psychological Services in Education program, Director of Clinical Training of the APA-approved Combined Doctoral Program in Counseling Psychology and School Psychology, and a Senior Research Associate in the Center for the Study of Technology in Counseling and Career Development. • Education: PhD in Counseling, Duke University, 1970 • Courses taught: • Personality assessment • Research methods • Consultation and organizational development • Dr. Peterson directed 29 doctoral dissertations and has published over 45 journal articles and 10 book chapters.

Dr. Steven Pfeiffer • Coordinator of the Mental Health Counseling program • Education: PhD, University of North Carolina, 1977 • Courses taught: • Ethics • Mental health law • Clinical supervision • Child psychotherapy • Group counseling • Professional practice • Dr. Pfeiffer authored or coauthored 5 books, 17 book chapters and about 100 articles.

Dr. Frances Prevatt • Chair, Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems; Co-Director of the Adult Learning Evaluation Center (A.L.E.C.) • Education: University of Virginia, Clinical Psychology, 1985 • Professional qualifications: Licensed Psychologist and Licensed School Psychologist • Research Interests: • College students and adults with ADHD and learning disabilities • Prediction of academic achievement in college students • Courses taught: • Assessment of Socio-Emotional Disorders in Children • Internship Supervision
