    1. Rhetorical Analysis Essay Question Unlike the general argument and synthesis essay, the rhetorical analysis essay does not invite the reader (you) to engage in the debate. You do not “take the author on.” It is not you verses the author in question. If you use>your score will be low.

    2. Analysis Question Instead, the task of this essay is to analyze methods the author employs in his or her writing to convey the author's attitude, opinion, or conviction about some topic. Nearly every speech, every political cartoon, every ad is an argument. To successfully complete this essay, you cannot engage in this argument.

    3. Analysis Question Instead, you must talk about how the argument is created. You should dissect the argument and identify the tools the author uses to seek the reader's agreement. This essay will demonstrate your ability to read critically and evaluate effectively the essential elements of a complex piece of prose.

    4. Analysis What have we done to help prepare you? Narrative Writing-helps identify author’s purpose, audience, strategies, and analyze language. Persuasion/Argument-provides further information on kind of persuasion (logos, ethos, pathos)

    5. Some Things Not to Do Do not address the author by his or her first name. Such as, “Abe made a good point there…” Give the author’s full name the first time you reference him or her and only use the last name for subsequent mentions.

    6. Some Other Things Not to Do Avoid using fancy language. Use clarity in your writing! As long as you think and write clearly, the AP graders are happy, and when they are happy, that is reflected in your score.

    7. What to Do The prompt reads, “Discuss the author’s attitude toward bear baiting and the strategies the author employed to achieve his purpose.” No problem! You read the passage and you know the author finds the “sport” cruel and condemns those who practice it. Pay attention to the the word “strategies.” What does that mean?

    8. What? Identify techniques the writer used to develop his argument. Rhetorical Strategies!!
