    8. 8 Break Forces The SB Couplings dry break-away couplings has three external breaking bolts. In the case of axial tension all of the bolts take up the force corresponding to the break force on the hose with a safety margin. Non-axial forces concentrate the tension forces more strongly on one bolt, so that the breakaway coupling reacts to the reduction of the hose break forces.     13. 13 Break Forces The MSB Couplings dry break-away couplings has three external breaking bolts. In the case of axial tension all of the bolts take up the force corresponding to the break force on the hose with a safety margin. Non-axial forces is minimized by an internal flange mechanism that provides increased resistance to torsion and bending forces which may be applied to the coupling in a marine application. The break forces are transferred to the breaking bolts through the hose string. When the force on the breaking bolts exceed their design load, the bolts break and allow the valves to seal and separate.     14. 14 How It Works The Safety break-away couplings consist of two halves, each with a valve that has a flat type-sealing surface similar to a dry disconnect coupling. When the force on the breaking bolts exceed their design load, the bolts break and allow the valves separate. The coupling automatically senses an excessive load, closes the valves and disconnects. When the SBCouplings separate, it allows the poppets to close. The two poppets close rapidly, minimizing product loss. Safety Break-away Couplings
