Supply Chain Network Simulator Using Cloud Computing Project # CDP10-SCNS Project Team Principal Investigator Manuel D. Rossetti, PhD, P.E. Graduate Assistant Yaohua Chen, MSc Project Motivation • For users, Cloud Computing is a kind of computing which uses shared resources to • Improve the average computing speed • Increase the elasticity of the maximum computing speed • Increase the storage space • Reduce investments on hardware and software • Reduce the complexity of maintenance of the system • Reduce the complexity of running an application Project Objectives • Develop an effective model for the simulation of large supply chains involving thousands of stock keep units stocked at different locations • Develop the software through a Software as a Service(SaaS) architecture that leverages the resources available within cloud computing Project Activities • Evaluation of different platforms for Cloud Computing • Simulation of Multi-Echelon Inventory System • Develop program for example problem and analyze results • Redesign architecture of the model from JSL and test it • Design supply chain simulator using Cloud Computing • Redesign random number generation, replication, etc. • Develop use cases for application • Develop cloud-computing architecture for document, application, analyze, etc. • Implement and test the application • Research Methodology • Conceptualization • Use Cloud Computing to solve simulation problem • Analysis • Develop a software that allow the users to simulate a model with Cloud Computing • System design • Define software requirements • Construct software framework • Detailed design • Build the model for supply chain network • Implementation • Develop the program for the model • Design user interface • Test the software with sample problem • Develop use cases for application • Maintenance • Develop user documentation • What is cloud and cloud computing? • Cloud computing is a type of computing which uses available resources outside the host computer, such as infrastructure, platform, software and services, to run the applications and report the results to end users. • Those available resources outside the host computer are called clouds, which usually are accessed from the Internet. Depending on the type of provided capacity, there are three scenarios where clouds are used (Luis M. Vaquero, et al., 2009): • Infrastructure as a Service • Platform as a Service • Software as a Service Deliverables • The software, the software’s application programming interface (API), and a users guide for the use of the software • A screen capture based recorded video demonstration webinar of the software • A project report in the form of a MS Project Report that summarizes the research and development related to the project, including a case study • Awhite paper on SaaS and cloud computing so CELDi organizations can better understand this computing paradigm • A conference article • An article within IIE Solutions magazine highlighting the availability and functionality of this software for potential new CELDi members Expected Results • A SaaS/Cloud computing application capable of evaluating the performance of multi-echelon supply networks through simulation Simulation Model
