5. Pilot duration: one week 189 children had fluoride varnish applied
80 children had never been to a dentist
Parents were concerned about previous personal bad experiences
No appointments were made
22 children were sent away due to potential medical history complications/concerns

“The service should also be there for adults”
“Needs to be more publicity”
“We should be visiting the local schools”
“Very impressed with this child orientated initiative”.
7. Practical points to consider Integrate into overall improving health plan for children
Link with local dental practices to ensure follow up
Hours: After school / late evenings / weekends
Engage the full dental team & all local practitioners
8. Next steps: Hounslow Pilot Project Phase 2 of pilot will start in November’2008
Extended duties dental nurses will cover term times, supported by general dental practitioners during holidays
Link with local practices who run prevention initiatives such as children's day
Brushing for Life packs distributed at local dental practices as incentive for follow up visit
Post-evaluation of numbers of children who have visited a dental practice after fluoride varnish application
