How To Maintain & Test My RV Batteries

In rig, all the batteries are of the lead-acid variety. There are also other types that are commonly used in RV or Motorhome such as Gel Cell, AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) & Lithium-ion. This PPT is only dealing with a lead acid type that is generally cheaper, nevertheless, it requires a bit of maintenance side of things.

  1. How To Maintain & Test My RV Batteries

  2. RV Batteries For Southern California RV Camping Trip • In rig, all the batteries are of the lead-acid variety. • Heading to RV camping Los Angeles, the lead batteries for keeping maintained & operating in good condition. This does not take too much neglect to lower the performance of batteries. There are things like corroded terminals. Also, the low fluid levels can have a dramatic effect. • Fortunately, maintenance is a quite simple thing. However, you just need to take a few precautions due to dealing with corrosive sulfuric acid.

  3. How To Maintain RV Batteries • First & foremost thing is to check the physical appearance of batteries. If you notice any crack or bulging, then it is required to replace the battery. If something is internally wrong with the battery, then this is not having worth it in the engine compartment or RV storage bay. • After that, remove the wiring & clean the battery posts & write connector lugs. Brushes for wire can work well with a mixture of baking soda & water if you are planning to Los Angeles RV camping. • In order to prevent corrosion in future, coat the exposed metal connector surfaces with a thin layer dielectric grease.

  4. How To Maintain RV Batteries • The maintenance is something that is overlooked all the time. It also causes many of the failures in the RV lead-acid batteries. • As time goes on, the battery can lose fluid through outgassing. You'll find out removable caps that are allowed to check up the battery fluid on the top of the battery. • The level of fluid must always remain above the lead plates inside the battery in order to prevent damage. • It takes a bit peeking down the holes with the flashlights in order to see the lead plates. The proper level of the battery is 1/8 of an inch before the plastic fill hole. It gives room for expansion without overflowing.

  5. Testing The RV Batteries You can test the RV batteries in two ways such as: 1)Digital Voltmeter 2)Hydrometer

  6. Preparing Batteries for Test • Before doing any performance the voltage & hydrometer tests, the batteries need to be fully charged. Then disconnect it. Leave it for a several hours. • After that, connect to a load & run for a few minutes in order to remove any surface charge. • Once these steps that are taken the battery is ready for an accurate test.

  7. Voltage Test & Hydrometer Battery Test • Voltage test is a very easy test that is known as voltage test. In this, you just need to place the leads on the positive & negative terminals. • Based on it, you can determine the state of charge. The fully charged 12-volt battery that will around 12.6 to 12.8 volts. • Hydrometer test is also quite simple. But it can be dangerous because you are dealing with the highly corrosive battery fluids. While performing this test, you just be careful when removing the battery filler caps.

  8. Tips While Working With Lead-Acid Batteries • Remove jewelry. • Wear rubber gloves (disposable). • You must have something for protection for your eyes. • If there's any splashed acid, then mop up with paper towels & dispose of them in the plastic bag. • In order to neutralize battery acid spills, then use a blend of baking soda & water. • The fresh water must be handy if you need to flush acid from your eyes & skin quickly.
