  1. Discipleship - Holiness 1 Pet. 1:13-19 (Lev. 11:44,45) Exhortation based on: The Character of God The command of God

  2. Definition • Disciple – “A learner, indicating thought accompanied by endeavor…” (Vine). • Holiness – “Separation to God…the conduct befitting those so separated, 1 Thess. 4:3-7” (Vine).

  3. Israel – A Holy Nation • Called out of Egypt – not because of their goodness (Dt. 9:4-6). • Called to be His people (Dt. 4:20) • Holiness was to be the fruit – their response (Lev. 11:44,45)

  4. We Are Called To Be Holy1 Pet. 1:13-19 • Motivated By: • Gratitude, vs. 18,19; Tit. 3:3-5 Dt. 5:15; 1 Cor. 11:24-26 • Judgment, v. 17; 2 Cor. 5:10; Rom. 14:12 • The Word, vs. 13-16; 2 Tim. 1:8-14 (soul committed v. 12; gospel committed, v. 14; 1 Tim.6:20)

  5. Holiness - Transformation • Not conforming, 1 Pet. 1:14; Rom. 12:1,2 • Transformed (schema) – the outward (1 Cor. 7:31); (morphe) – the inward change (2 Cor. 3:18). • The God who can change a caterpillar into a butterfly – can transform us!

  6. Holiness - Humility • Begins with self-denial (the foundation of discipleship), Rom. 12:3,16-18 • Connected with rejoicing and weeping, (v. 15). How do we act when a brother or sister is honored or hurt?

  7. Holiness – Brotherly love • Rom. 12:10 • Kindly affectionate – phileo – love; anthropos – man • Brotherly love – phileo – love; storge –family love (Rom. 1:31 astorgos - without natural affection; unloving)

  8. Conclusion • Unity is the fruit of brotherly love, Eph. 4:1-3 • “Christianity has about the same effect on many brethren as a good case of the flu. We come in the church house door and sit as far back as possible, we come in as late as possible, go to sleep as soon as possible, and leave as fast as possible. To whom do we think we can give this kind of Christianity?”
