Drunkenness among Athenian nightclub goers: relationship with other risk behaviours and consequences Study groups • Drunkeness group: Nightclub goers who get drunk frequently (at least twice in the last month): 63 persons (37.7%) • Comparison group: Nightclub goers who rarely (once in the last month) or never get drunk: 104 persons (62.3%)
Drunkenness group: Comparison group: 4 (sd: 3.0) partners 2.4 (sd: 6.7) partners Sexual behaviour: Average number of sexual partners(last year)
Life time use of cannabis, cocaine, Ecstasy, LSD, Amyl nitrates
Conclusions • Findings show that frequent drunkenness in nightlife context is mainly related to male young people • Relationship problems, aggressiveness, illicit drug use, and deviant behaviours appeared to be commoner among nightclub goers who get drunk frequently than those who rarely or never get drunk
Conclusions • The fact that a great number of nightclub goers who get drunk frequently, adopt risk behaviours related to their sexual activity and driving may increases the risk of infectious diseases (e.g. AIDS/HIV) and car accidents • Considering that frequent drunkenness is closely associated to other risk behaviours which might result as a consequence of drinking excessively, prevention interventions towards reducing drunkenness incidents are considered to be necessary in recreational settings
