  1. Questioning How to ask the best questions to get the information you need for your German class inquiry project.

  2. Why is learning how to question important? • Creates the basis of your research • Saves time when you ask the right questions • Wrong questions can lead to dead ends, wrong answers

  3. Four Types of Questions • Factual: usually only one right answer , concrete • Interpretive: answers vary, but must be supported by facts • Evaluative: infinite answers, opinions and feelings • Imaginative: infinite answers, what if? questions

  4. Examples • Factual: When did the Berlin Wall come down? • Interpretive: Why is lunch the biggest meal of the day in Germany? • Evaluative: What is your favorite German food and why? • Imaginative: What If I Were a German Teenager?

  5. Tips for Questioning • Avoid asking yes or no questions – answers won’t get you far • Try starting questions with “Describe . . .” or “Tell me. . .” – especially in interviews • Revise questions as needed • Remember those 6 W’s – Who, What, When, Where, Why, How

  6. Identify These Questions • What is the capitol of Germany? • Factual • Describe a place where you would like to travel? • Imaginative • How do you feel you are doing in German class? • Evaluative • What did President Kennedy mean when he said “Ich bin ein Berliner”? • Interpretive
