  1. Why You Should Use Marine Equipment on Your Boat. (Marine Subwoofers) The subwoofer on your vessel must be capable of withstanding the environmental abuse of a marine climate. This includes moisture, rapid temperature changes and constant exposure to UV rays. Due to the subwoofer’s larger size, increased power handling, and excursion capabilities, added strain on its parts significantly increases the subwoofer’s chances of mechanical failure. When you consider the damage that a marine climate can cause, you can see why purchasing a marine subwoofer specifically designed to endure the elements is absolutely essential. Just as we do with our full range marine speakers, RPM-10S4SL - RPM 10" 4 Ohm 400W SVC Subwoofer go through stringent environmental testing to ensure all materials (cone, surround, basket etc.), adhesive bonds and key junction areas, such as the cone/voice coil and former/spider assembly, all meet the demands of the marine climate. Due to space limitations, it’s common to choose an infinite baffle subwoofer over a subwoofer enclosure on a vessel. Infinite Baffle subwoofers mount into your vessel’s sidewall and don’t require an enclosure. This kind of flexibility allows you to install the appropriate subwoofer for your specific application without sacrificing the sonic performance of the driver. Whether it’s on a boat or in a car, subwoofers are a vital part of every sound system due to their unique ability to reproduce the low frequencies (bass) that a conventional component or coaxial speaker cannot. Subsequently, by adding a subwoofer to your system, you will also improve the sound of the existing speakers because they are no longer taxed by attempting to play lower frequencies. Whether or not you need a subwoofer for your boat will depend on how and where you enjoy listening to music from your boat. If you only have your music playing while out on the water, going 20+ mph, a single subwoofer is not going to do much. You will need better subwoofers that can handle more power and the right amplifier to deliver that power. Now, the other important aspect is whether or not you want to feel the bass. If you want a subwoofer to feel the bass in your chest, adding a single subwoofer to your boat is not going to help like it will in a car.   2. a car, in your living room, or even in a concert hall, there are walls to contain the sound waves. In a boat, you don't have those walls and/or a ceiling. Instead the open air environment lets those sound waves escpace. Adding a subwoofer to your boat will not be the same as adding a subwoofer in a car. A single marine subwoofer will still fill out the bottom end of your music, but bass doesn't come cheap. When in doubt, get the more expensive subwoofer, than can handle more power, and give the sub the power it wants. If you do this, you will be much happier. There are no short cuts when it comes to bass on a boat. What is the difference between Free Air and Infinite Baffle? None. The two words are synonymous when it comes to marine subwoofers. It means that the subwoofer does not need to be mounted in an enclosure. From a marine perspective, it means you can install the subwoofer directly into the hull of the boat without having to worry about the proper air space. When you see a subwoofer that is designed for an enclosure, this means that the subwoofer needs to be in a controlled environment with a fixed amount of air space to operate properly. Can You Put a Car Subwoofer in Your Boat? Absolutely. It is actually very popular. You can put a loaded subwoofer enclosure that was built for a car and put it on your boat as long as it isn't going to get wet or exposed to UV light. Many people will put a car subwoofer enclosure in the dead space under a seat, or you can put them in the footwell area by the driver. Since car subwoofer enclosures are made of wood, if they get wet, they can rot and get pretty nasty, but if it lasts you 3-5 years, you might not care. You also want to make sure that the subwoofer itself is not exposed to UV light. Car subwoofers will not last in the sun's damaging rays like a marine subwoofer will. They don't use the special materials and the cost associated with those materials because in a car environment, it doesn't matter. If you can keep your subwoofer dry and out of the sun, you can save some money by opting to go with a car subwoofer enclosure for your boat. Do Marine Subwoofers come with Grilles? Some marine subwoofers come with speakers grilles and others do not. All of the Rockford Fosgate and JL Audio subwoofers come with grilles. The Wet Sounds and Kicker marine subwoofers do not include grilles. We do recommend protecting your subwoofer with a grille so you will need to puchase one separately on our marine subwoofer grilles page.
