So, you’re looking to land a job in Finance? • Things you might want to review: • Overviews of industry • Information on specific firms • Where to find the latest trends and news • Getting a list of financial firms by specific characteristics • League tables and rankings information • Information on deals, deal managers, and underwriters

Key resources for interview prep and creating targets lists • S&P Industry Surveys: industry, incl. top 20. • Capital IQ: company info, deals, people • Factiva: news (recent and older) • Baker Financial Services Industry and Financial Rankings research guides • Bloomberg: league tables, deals, everything So, that’s what we’ll cover today!

  4. S&P Industry Reports http://www.library.hbs.edu/go/s_and_p.html • Detailed overviews of over 50 industries. Global scope. • Includes: “Investment Services,” “Financial Services: Diversified,” “Banking,” and “REITS.” • Reviews current industry issues, top players, how to analyze an industry. • Updated every six months. • Once in the database, select industry from the Industry Surveys pull-down menu.Tip: Use PDF format.

Can set up RSS feeds.

Once in Factiva, click on the “Search” Tab 2. Select Source: Wall Street Journal (click ONCE to add) 3. In the "Free Text" search box, type Goldman Sachs. 4. From the "Date" pull-down menu select "In the last year", then click on "Run Search" button 4. Articles on Goldman Sachs in the Wall Street Journal will appear. Sort by Relevancy to get articles that mention Goldman the most. 5. To download selected articles to Microsoft Word, click “RTF”.

Capital IQ: Creating Deals Listshttp://www.library.hbs.edu/go/capitaliq.html • Tocreate list of transactions/deals: Click on “Screening & Analytics” tab then choose Screening—Transactions • To create target list of firms/companies: Click on “Screening & Analytics” tab then choose Screening—Companies • Then • Select desired criteria and click “Add Criteria” • Click “Total Matching” to display results • To create a specific report, click “Customize” under Display Options. Then choose desired fields and click “View Results.” Now choose “All Transactions” under Reporting Options and click Go.

Capital IQ Example: List of Deals by Financial Advisor – Morgan Stanley • To do this search: • Go to "Analytics & Targeting" tab and choose "Transaction" Screening • Click on "Add Companies" under the Coverage Management section. • Search for advisors by name [in this case Morgan Stanley]. • Add them to Selected Items, then select "Advisor" from the "This criterion describes" field. Click Add Criteria button. • Then under “General Transaction Details” click on “Transaction Dates” and choose “last 12 months”. • Click Add Criteria button. • Click on “Total Matching” to view results.
