  1. INGROWN TOENAILS: CAUSES, SYMPTOMS, TREATMENT & PREVENTION INTRODUCTION An ingrown toenail occurs when the corner or edge of a toenail grows into the adjacent skin. Ingrown toenails are a common condition where the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing discomfort and sometimes infection. This often affects the big toe and can result from improper nail trimming, tight footwear, or injury. Symptoms include pain, redness, and swelling. While mild cases can be managed with self-care, such as proper nail cutting and wearing suitable shoes, severe cases may require medical intervention. CAUSES OF INGROWN TOENAILs Incorrect Nail Trimming: Cutting your toenails too short or rounding the corners can lead to ingrown toenails. Ill-Fitting Shoes: Tight or poorly fitting shoes can put pressure on the toenails, causing them to grow into the skin. Trauma: Bumping your toe or getting stepped on can disrupt the normal nail growth. Toe Shape: If your toenail is larger relative to your toe or if the surrounding tissue naturally grows over the nail border, ingrown toenails may develop. SYMPTOMS OF INGROWN TOENAILS Pain: The affected area becomes tender and painful. Redness and Swelling: The skin around the toenail becomes inflamed. Pus or Fluid: Infection may lead to discharge from the toe. Warmth: The toe may feel warm due to inflammation. TREATMENT OPTIONS Self-Care: Soak your feet in warm, soapy water to soften the nail and skin.

  2. Gently lift the ingrown edge of the nail away from the skin using a clean cotton ball or dental floss. Apply antibiotics or antifungal lotions to prevent infection. Over-the-counter pain medication can help manage discomfort. Professional Treatment: Wedge Resection: Removal of the offending part of the nail plate. Matrixectomy: For recurrent cases, the sides of the nail are destroyed using chemicals or excision. Preventive Measures: Trim toenails straight across. Wear well-fitting shoes. Keep toenails at a moderate length. Practice good foot hygiene. COMPLICATIONS In healthy individuals, ingrown toenails usually don’t cause serious complications. However, in rare cases: Infection: The area around the nail may become infected. Scarring: Scarring of the nail fold can occur. CONCLUSION Ingrown toenails are a common annoyance, but with proper care and attention can prevent them from becoming a significant problem. It advises trim nails correctly, choose comfortable footwear and seek professional help if necessary. The article aims to inform readers about the importance of good foot hygiene and appropriate nail care to avoid the discomfort associated with ingrown toenails. Remember, taking these preventive measures can help maintain healthy feet and avoid complications
