Mt. Vesuvius, Italy Scott Horton Timothy Kennedy
The plates involved and location • African plate and Eurasian plate • Convergent • Location: bay of Naples
Explanation of tectonics • African plate pushed beneath Eurasian plate forming Mt. Vesuvius • Created submerged volcano deep below surface • Later, Mount Vesuvius emerged from the ocean as an island and over time has connected to the mainland due to the buildup of deposits from its eruptions
Geologic History • 79 A.D. first volcanic eruption ever to be described in detail; buried towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum • Most devastating, over 16,000 people died • In 5960 B.C. and 3580 B.C. Vesuvius had two eruptions that rate among largest known in Europe • Vesuvius has erupted about three dozen times since 79 A.D., most recently from 1913-1944. The 1913-1944 eruption is thought to be the end of an eruptive cycle that began in 1631.
Safety around Mt. Vesuvius • Scientist study volcano to give warning • Have evacuation procedures for local residences • Recommend any visitors look over procedures • Have procedures for if you are caught in a eruption
Recent History • AD 79, 203, 472, 512, 787, 968, 991, 999, 1007 • Dormant for many years • 1631, 1660, 1682, 1694, 1698, 1707, 1737, 1760, 1767, 1779, 1794, 1822, 1834, 1939, 1850, 1855, 1861, 1868, 1872, 1906, 1944 • Dormant sense • Average 4 ½ to 7 years
Potential Impacts • Considered the most dangerous volcano • Over Half Million people live on or around mountain • Eruption are catastrophic • Not expected to erupt any time soon
