  2. What is Contrast? • Different and Opposite • In Art, Contrast is used between elements of design. • Similar (low degree of Contrast) • Opposite or “Complementary” • (Highest degree of Contrast). • Ex: Red and Green, Black and white

  3. Can you name any examples? Look around the room at the artwork. What is the difference between DIFFERENT and SIMILAR?

  4. Contrasting Color: • Identify the COMPEMENTARY colors and the SIMILAR colors. • The black dress on the woman • The white and blue dresses on the girls.

  5. This abstract portrait uses color temperature Contrast to draw your eye to the Focal Point. Color Temperature

  6. Even though there is no subject matter (objects in the artwork), the emphasis is clear due to the complementary colors placed next to each other. Color Complements

  8. Where do you look first? Contrast helps artists to create Emphasis: the focal point of an art work (I.e. where you look first and the most).
