  5. Poverty in Wisconsin by the Numbers • 192,000 Wisconsin children live below the federal poverty level. • Fully 1 in 6 Wisconsin kids under the age of 5 live in Poverty • The number of Wisconsin children living in extreme poverty has risen to 80,000 since 2000

  6. So, what’s the Vision? • Healthy Kids • Quality Early Care & Education • Safe, Affordable Housing • Quality Jobs

  7. Healthy Kids Goal: By the year 2020, all Wisconsin children should have health insurance and access to appropriate, timely and consistent preventative care, dental and mental health services. (Current Grade = B-)

  8. Quality Early Care & Education Goal: By 2020, Wisconsin will build a universally accessible system of quality early childhood education and care and after school programs that support optimal child development. (Current Grade = B-)

  9. Safe, Affordable Housing Goal: By the year 2020, Wisconsin must expand affordable housing options to end family homelessness and enable parents to raise their children in healthy and nurturing environments. (Current Grade = C)

  10. Access to Family Supporting Jobs & Wages Goal: By the year 2020 every child in Wisconsin will live in a household with caregivers who are prepared for and have access to family supporting wages. (Current Grade = C+)

The Challenges • Hopelessness – belief that change isn’t possible • Micro-level focus • Fears/misperceptions about “advocacy” & lack of advocacy know-how • Lack of coordination among different local efforts • Lack of information about best practices • Poverty awareness does not necessarily = action

  13. The Opportunities • Pockets of activity throughout the state • Great enthusiasm about the campaign • Ripe, compelling issues • Tremendous interest in advocacy training • Strong potential for local groups & emerging leadership • 2008 Elections (Presidential & legislative)
