Interworking between HN and IPTVOther SDOs’ Status and A New Standard Item ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1 Pyung-Soo Kim, Ph. D. System Software Solution Lab. Dept. of EE, Korea Polytechnic University
Prelude • This presentation is not a new proposal concretely researched. • Just, an introduction of other SDOs’ status on Interworking between Home Network and IPTV • ITU-T, Open IPTV Forum, DVB Project. • Then, a new standard item to be researched is briefly introduced. • I hope to propose officially a new standard item in next October meeting after researching concretely.
Why IPTV Service in HN? • The HN has become a preferred environment for many end users to receive multimedia services in the home. • Thus, IPTV services are likely to be delivered using home networking technology. • In order to provide IPTV users with good user experience and to bring down the costs, IPTV devices need to interact seamlessly with the HN and with each other on the HN. • For that purpose, a standardized HN architecture and technology supporting IPTV services might be essential.

A New Standard Item @ ISO/IEC JTC1 SC25 WG1
Motivation of New Standard Item The HN has become a preferred environment for many users to receive multimedia services, such as IPTV, in the home. Today or in near future, Telco based or Cable based primary IPTV service providers will put a residential gateway (RG) in the HN to provide various consumer-facing services. Using the RG, 3rd party or retail IPTV service providers as well as primary IPTV service providers can implement more advanced and innovative customer service features. A newstandard item on HES based RG might be required for supporting IPTV services in HN.
New Standard Item Local IPTV Service Platform (LISP) on Residential Gateway (Tentative title) can play a role of a conceptual platform to provide programming interfaces and functionalities to enable 3rd party or retail IPTV service providers to deliver home network related local IPTV applications and services to end users in the home network. can communicate and interwork with primary service delivery platforms to create more value for (Telco based or Cable based originating) primary IPTV service provider as well as end users in the home network. can be a “patch on” solution of the residential gateway for HES(ISO/IEC 15045-1), that is, not a “built in” solution.
New Standard Item What can be home network based local IPTV applications and services through LISP on RG? Home Control & Automation Services Home Media & Information Services Healthcare Services Internet Telephony Public Interest Services Portal Services Targeted Content Distribution
New Standard Item • Service Scenario Home Network End Users in Home (Telco based or Cable based) Primary IPTV Service LISP on RG Managed or Unmanaged Network HN related local applications and services for IPTV 3rd Party or Retail Service Provider
What to do for a New Standard Item? To define functional requirements for the LISP on RG in the home network environment Architecture, Security(Authentication), 3rd Party Service Provider Management, User Information Management, Content Management, Access Control, Accounting, etc. To provide interfaces and functionalities to enable 3rd party or retail IPTV service providers to offer home network based local IPTV applications and services though the LISP on RG.
Conclusions Today’s presentation has not been a new proposal concretely researched. Just, an introduction of other SDOs’ status on Interworking between IPTV and Home Network ITU-T, Open IPTV Forum, DVB Project. A new standard item to be researched has been briefly introduced.
Conclusions The new standard item should be a “patch on” solution of the residential gateway for HES(ISO/IEC 15045-1), that is, not a “built in” solution in order to preserve interoperability of the original ISO/IEC 15045-1 specifications. I hope to propose officially a new standard item in next October meeting after researching concretely.
