  1. Mary Lecture 9: Holy Spirit Mary’s role in Salvation Four Dogmas

  2. Typology • Where is Mary in Scripture? • Unity of Scripture • We must remember that the Bible is not just the New Testament. • The Bible must be read in its whole; the NT and the OT. • “The New Testament is hidden in the Old, the the Old Testament is revealed in the New.” • Prooftexting? • Catholics don’t simply find support for her Marian beliefs by finding isolated passages that seem to support the Church doctrines.

  3. Typology • Definition • The interpretive principle by which the Church reads the New Testament in light of the Old Testament. • Type • Anything in the Old Testament that points to the coming of Christ and His work in our redemption. • People, places, or events in the OT that prefigure, foreshadow, or prepare God’s people for salvation through the son of God. • Scriptural roots • Heb 8:5 = “[The Jerusalem priests] serve as a copy and shadow of the heavenly sanctuary.” • Rom 5:14 = “Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.”

  4. Typology • Jesus’ use of typology • Mt 12:6 = Jesus explains that he is greater than the Temple. • Mt 12:41 = Jesus compares himself to Jonah. Jonah was saved from the belly of the whale after 3 days; Christ will rise from the dead after 3 days. • Mt 12:42 = Jesus is greater than Solomon. Solomon built the temple on the foundation stone; Christ built the Church on Peter, the “Rock.”

  5. Marian Typology • From the very beginning of Scripture we see the man and the woman. • Old Testament • Adam and Eve • Moses and the Ark • David and his Queen Mother • New Testament • New Adam and New Eve • New Moses and the New Ark • Christ, the true Son of David and Mary, the true Queen Mother • Eve and Mary • Eve = A virgin and undefiled, having conceived the word of the serpent, brought disobedience and death into the world. • Mary = A virgin and undefiled, received and conceived the word of the Angel Gabriel, gave birth to the Son of God, thus obedience and life entered the world.

  6. Objection • Why do I have to go to Mary when I can go directly to Jesus? • Fact of the matter: • Jesus does not come directly to us. • Jesus comes to us thru the Holy Spirit. • We do not go directly to Jesus. • We go to Jesus thru the Holy Spirit. • Holy Spirit • Enables us to: • Be united with Jesus; believe in Jesus; be united with the Father. • Scripture • Rom 8:9-12 • 1 Cor 12:3

  7. Holy Spirit in the OT • Creation = Gen 1:1-2 • Spirit of God overshadowed the waters. • Ark of the Covenant = Ex 40:34-38 • Exodus = Holy Spirit led Israelites out of Egypt in form of pillar of cloud. • Mt. Sinai = Leads them to Mt. Sinai - wrapped in cloud. • The Ark = God gave Moses clear instructions how to build the ark. The pillar of cloud filled the ark. • Temple = I Kings 8:10 • Solomon built Temple - cloud fills the Temple. • 586 BC = Babylonians destroy Jerusalem and Temple.

  8. Ark of the Covenant contained: Manna - bread from heaven. Tablets - Ten Commandments (words of God) Staff of Aaron - High Priest Holy Spirit in the NT • New Creation • Gen 1:1-2 • Luke 1:26-35 • New Ark of the Covenant • Mary’s womb contained Jesus: • True bread from heaven. • The Word of God in flesh. • The true High Priest

  9. (v 2) “And David arose and went with all the people who were with him up to Baalejuda….” (v 18) “[David] blessed the people in the name of the Lord…” (v 9) “David said, ‘How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” (v 16) “Michal…looked out the window and saw King David leaping before the ark.” (v 11) “And the ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months.” 2 Sam 6 = The Ark Luke 1:39-52 = Mary Visitation • (v 39) • “In those days Mary rose and went with hast into the hill country, to a city of Judah…” • (v 42) • [Elizabeth] exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women.’” • (v 43) • And why is this granted to me, that the Mother of my Lord should come to me?” • (v 44) • “For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy.” • (v 56) • And Mary remained with [Elizabeth] for about three months.
