  3. WHAT IS GERD? GERD is a chronic digestive disorder that occurs when stomach acid or bile flows back into the esophagus. The esophagus is the muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. Normally, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) acts as a barrier, preventing stomach contents from flowing back into the esophagus. However, in GERD, the LES becomes weak or relaxes at inappropriate times, allowing acid to flow back into the esophagus.

The LES is a ring of muscle that surrounds the bottom of the esophagus and acts as a barrier between the esophagus and stomach. When food passes through the esophagus into the stomach, the LES relaxes and opens to allow food to pass into the stomach. However, in GERD patients, the LES is either weak or relaxes at inappropriate times, allowing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus. Over time, this acid reflux can irritate and damage the lining of the esophagus, leading to symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, and dysphagia.
