  1. What are Sensex andNifty?

  2. Introduction • It is not possible to track all the companies listed on the stock exchange just to know the condition of the stock market. Hence indices are made to easily track thepicture • of themarket. • There are two main stock exchanges inIndia: • National Stock Exchange (NSE) having Nifty is its mainindex • Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) having Sensex is its mainindex

  3. What isSensex? • The term Sensex has been derived from two words that is SENSitive andIndEX. • More than 5000 companies are listed on BSE out of which only 30 selected companies representSensex. • It represents almost all the sectors well through representativecompanies.

  5. How is Sensexcalculated? • Sensex is calculated using the “Free float market capitalization weighted average”method. • In this method, only the number of stocks available readily for trade areconsidered. • This does not include the stocks that are held by promoters ormanagement.

What isNifty? • Nifty is Index that is introduced by NSE and has been derived by merging the two words ‘National’ and‘fifty’. • Nifty is also known as Nifty Fifty, as there are50 • companies inNIFTY. • More than 1600 companies are listed on NSE out of which only 50 selected companies representNifty.

How Nifty iscalculated? • The Nifty 50 index was initially calculated on full market capitalization, but later changed to the free floatmethodology. • The method of calculation of the Nifty is very similar to that of the Sensex, but with three basicdifferences. • The base year is taken as1995 • The base value is set to1000 • The number of stocks taken is50
