  1. When Should You Use Your Fog Lights

  2. While I was driving along the highway one clear night I noticed that my fog lights were on.

  3. I thought I should probably shut them off, but then I noticed after they were off nothing has really changed.

  4. So I turned the fog lamps on and off and the only thing I noticed was a small part of the road along the side of my car was being lit up.

  5. Thinking nothing about it, I decided to just keep them on.

  6. I mean it didn’t affect very much at all, it couldn’t hurt leaving them on.

  7. Then one day a friend told me about how the fog lamps could blind other drivers, so I decided to do a little research.

  8. What Are Fog Lights Designed To Do

  9. Your car’s fog lights are designed to be used in foggy weather.

  10. Unlike your headlights that can cause a glare in the fog.

  11. Fog lights tend to beam out wide and flat, creating a bar of light on the road to help you see.

  12. Some fog lamps come in yellow because it was believed that yellow actually helps reduce glare, while newer fog lights come in white mainly for cosmetic purposes.

  13. When Should You Use Your Fog Lights

  14. I have discovered that you should only use your fog lamps when visibility drops below 100 meters according to the Highway Code.

  15. Some cities actually fine you if you are driving around with them on during clear weather conditions.

  16. A simple rule you can follow just in case you are not sure when it is safe to use your fog lamps.

  17. You really do not need to use your fog lights unless the fog is extremely thick.

  18. A good way of knowing if the fog is thick enough would be whether you can see the tail lights of the car in front of you or not.

  19. If you can see the tail lights, chances are, you probably will not need to use your fog lamps.

  20. Your fog lamps can be used in thick rain or even a snow storm as well.

  21. Is It OK To Drive With Fog Lights On All The Time

  22. The bottom line is you should shut them off your fog lights in clear conditions and only use them when visibility is really low.

  23. But honestly, you can drive around with them on all the time if you want.

  24. Just remember that your lights may be blinding someone else on the road.
