The Solution to E-Waste

So what exactly is e-recycling? To answer that, it's imperativeto know the reason for its existence in the first place: E-waste. Here's a quick primer on both concepts.

  1. The Solution toE-Waste

  2. Saving the world by selling used electronics? Who would have thought an act so seemingly mundane could have an effect so profound? E-recyclers, that’s who; but first, a background.

  3. Decades (or stretches of decades) are marked by defining trends. One of these trends prevalent to present society is the miniaturization of technology. This doesn’t necessarily mean that gadgets have to become smaller (Apple’s iPad is practically an oversized iPhone without the telephony functions), although in most cases, form does follow function. No, rather, it means that more processing power can be packed into smaller and smaller spaces. This renders production costs cheaper, which means more people are able to afford these gadgets.

  4. As a result of technologies becoming more affordable, another trend that has developed over the years in tandem is the advancement of the net and the way it connects people. As gadgets enter more households, the internet becomes a part of everyday life as augmented by these gadgets. Simply stated, one simply cannot be left without a gadget of some sort connecting him to the net, and by extension, the whole world.

  5. Yet another trend that’s an offshoot of the cheapening production costs is that engineers and financiers are able to devote more time, resources, and budget towards research, leading to technology improving at an almost alarming rate. Every other season, the device which we thought would be future-proof for at least a couple more years turns out to already be “outdated” (a relative term, to be sure).

  6. (MINIATURIZATION, INTERCONNECTIVITY, AND FAST TECHNOLOGY TURNOVERS) LANDFILLS FILLED TO THE BRIM WITH DISCARDED ELECTRONIC GADGETS, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS E-WASTE.

  7. E-waste is more than just accumulated garbage of plastic and silicon (although those two in their own right are notoriously already very difficult to break down). It is also chemicals like lead, cadmium, and beryllium leaking from batteries, capacitors, and other electronic components; and these chemicals only serve to further increase the already hazardous danger levels manifold. It is because of e-waste that many have seen fit to just sell old electronics or give them away instead of just relegating them to the nearest dumpster.

  8. While certainly viable, there is a better, green-focused solution: E-recycling. Created specifically as a countermeasure against e-waste, e-recycling is the refurbishing of old and used electronics to make them commercially usable again. E-recycling centers collect these gadgets and inspect them thoroughly. They identify the unusable parts and very carefully separate them and dispose of them under the strictest recycling standards. They then repair and restore the gadget to pristine working condition, and resell them to consumers at much lower prices than these devices were originally sold at.

  9. This isn’t a be-all-end-all solution to e-waste at the least – that solution being largely utopian for now – but it is currently the best one. Until we come up with a better one (like, say, shooting all our garbage straight into the sun; although that may potentially create its own line of problems), it would do us well to take heed.
