Best time for Leh Ladakh Trip • Best time to visit Leh Ladakh: Leh Ladakh is one of the most immaculate and precious gift of nature to the country. Ladakh is an un-paralleled paradise. Travelling to Leh Ladakh is one of the most venerated dreams for many. Experiencing the sights of enormous and desolate extent of hills and canyons amalgamated with the exhilarating experience of un-fluctuating the severe climate is one of its kind adventures.
What would be the best time for Leh Ladakh? • Summers are said to be the suitable time to visit the place when the weather is more pleasant and congenial, when the snow melts down and there is a whiz of bustle with the kaleidoscopic and spirited “Hemis Festival” taking place. It is often said that Ladakh is perchance the only place where you can get both sunburn and frostbite at the same time!
April to Mid-May: April indicates the commencement of tourist season in Ladakh when the place begins to limber up with tourist activity. Various camps at sites such as Pangong Tso and Moriri Lake begin to set up. Nevertheless, both Khardung La and Chang La passes are still beneath the snow and it’s an unforgettable experience in itself to elapse through them. Typically by the second week of May, the imperative Srinagar-Leh highway opens up leading to a bustle of tourism vivacity into Ladakh. By the end of the month of April, all the lakes including the Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri begin to melt, revealing the exquisite colors and splendid views.
Mid-May to July: In the beginning of June Manali road opens up along with Rohtang Pass, however, the first two weeks are not appropriate for travelling since area experiences snow slides and frequent blockages. Meanwhile, just before the monsoons, the weather is cool and pleasant to travel to Ladakh due to the awesome weather. The roads are verged by high snow walls around Rohtang and sometimes Baralacha pass too and there are many other astounding views of saturating snow to enjoy. However, due to quick melting, the roads and paths are wet with pouring waters, that sometimes it becomes tough to cross them.
August to Mid-September: From the month of August to the Mid-September the monsoons are in full swing and rivers, pools and water crossings are over-flowing. Travelling during this season can be life-threatening and dangerous as landslides are natural.
Mid-September to Mid-October: This is just the right span to pay a visit. This is one of the best seasons of all for visiting the astonishing and striking locations of Leh and Ladakh as the place is pervaded in beautiful colors in all their grandeur. The end of the monsoons makes the weather dry with a beginning freeze and sporadic snowfall. Furthermore, most of the water bodies surrounding the locations turn aqua blue and the place is filled with awe-inspiring beauty.
Mid-October to Mid-November: With the onset of these months cold completely takes over the range with the place experiencing sub-zero temperatures at all locations above 14,000 ft. During this time travelling by roads is not possible as the highways are closed. All the beautiful lakes are frozen and camping isn’t possible. Winters are very harsh and it is hard to sustain in such climate, it is not advisable to travel during this time.
Mid-November to March: This is the coldest seasons of all in Ladakh when the region is completely cut-off from rest of the India by road, although roads to Pangong Tso Lake and Nubra valley over Khardungla Pass and Chang La Pass are kept open all round the year, leaving few days of snow-fall. People don’t prefer to travel to Leh during the winter months as the winters on the “roof of the world” can get unbearable. The conditions at this time are that of severe cold and there is recurrent snowfall which makes endurance and adaptation tough. The Chadar Trek is best conducted between January and Mid-March.
