  1. PBS Learning News Achieving the right blend! Where can I find information about eLearning? 1 8 Issue 1 – Autumn 2007 Coming Soon to a Room Near You… Current Sources of eLearning Information Use this website to find out information about the latest eLearning news, Victory, and training courses. Staff can also book a workshop, or ask for a blank Victory site to be created, by emailing the ‘elearn’ link below. eTeam! The University of Portsmouth is migrating from its current online learning environment ‘WebCT’ to a new one called ‘Victory’. To assist PBS staff to make full use of this new VLE, and to help implement the University’s eLearning Strategy, a new team has been formed: the ‘eTeam’. The DCQE eLearning Centre – Town Mount The primary task of the PBS ‘eTeam’ is to assess current practice in the adoption and use of eLearning within the faculty, to support PBS staff as they add an eLearning component to their courses, and to help improve online units after WebCT materials have been migrated to Victory. The ‘eTeam’ will also identify best practice in the use of media and computing tools to enhance online courses, in conjunction with the University eLearning Centre led by Mrs. Sue Sayce. The ‘eTeam’ will be supported by staff from the PBS Service Delivery Team managed by Mr. Barrie Miles. This bulletin will become a quarterly source of news for staff needing to get help on using eLearning in their teaching at PBS. 2. Who makes up the eTeam at PBS? Are there courses I can do to discover eLearning methods? 7 2 eLearning Training Sessions eTeam Member Profiles David Starkey: PBS eLearning Coordinator Undertaking his role on a 0.5 FTE basis, David will identify priorities for PBS to meet the targets set out in the University eLearning Strategy 2007-2010. He will also organise seminars on ways to best use Victory and other eLearning tools, and will be able to help members of PBS staff develop an eLearning side to their units and courses. The other half of his time involves undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, undergraduate admissions, and eBusiness course leadership within SBS. Rachel Short: PBS Online Course Developer Joining the Business School from the ‘Learning at Work’ programme where she was Senior Course Administrator, Rachel has a BSc in Business & Psychology, and a lot of experience supporting courses with WebCT, partly through her work on the former ‘Technology Extended Campus’. Rachel also has DreamWeaver and Fireworks skills, and has trained as an online course facilitator. She will be able to help staff build and upgrade sites in Victory, on a one to one or group basis. eLearning Workshops DCQE offers a wide selection of eLearning training and WebCT-to-Victory migration workshops, some of which are delivered in the Richmond IT suite. The link to the appropriate page of the Elearning Centre website is below. Other topics cover eAssessment, Podcasting, Use of Captivate, and much more. The eTeam will also offer seminars in the use of Victory to make sites of varying complexity, and in the use of relevant software tools, including Camtasia Studio and video editing applications. A programme of these sessions will be issued by separate cover. Requests for training sessions will also be welcome. Barrie Miles: PBS Service Delivery Manager Barrie leads the PBS Service Delivery Team that, in addition to helping resolve IS problems, can assist with WebCT issues. Ian Plant or Michelle Kane also offer a service of media digitisation and enhancement. They can turn VHS tapes into compressed DVD format, or arrange for digital video materials to be added to the streaming server. Typically they can turn a video file into a streamable link embedded into WebCT or Victory in days. Minor video editing is also offered. To learn more, contact Barrie. http://www.elearning.port.ac.uk/workshops/

  3. Who do I ask for help with eLearning? Our exponents of good practice 3 6 PBS Departmental eLearning Champions A Rough Guide to finding eLearning Help! I can’t get WebCT or Victory to play, and need advice! Contact the eTeam, or get help via email: elearn@port.ac.uk. I want to create new content or media for WebCT/Victory sites. Contact Rachel Scott or David Starkey, or attend a workshop. I have a need for a departmental policy on eLearning. David Starkey can help adapt a current eLearning Policy. I need advice on Victory migration, or to book a workshop. Contact the eTeam, or get help by email: elearn@port.ac.uk. Economics Ken Heather HRMM Sarah Gilmore Acc. & Law Margaret Yarr SBS Andrea Foley I need to get new empty WebCT or Victory unit sites created. Email elearn@port.ac.uk, & the DCQE team will set up the site. PBS has four departmental eLearning Champions, whose job is to identify good eLearning practice within the faculty, and to pass on news of such methods to staff. Ken Heather is a leading exponent of employing video in teaching, and was one of the first members of staff to make use of streaming video to deliver course content. Information and tips taught to undergraduates on his Economics course have become widely referred to by students as ‘Ken’s Gems’! Ken has published a number of papers on eLearning, spoken at our L&T Conferences, and is currently testing the usefulness for students of podcasts describing previous/future lectures. Sarah Gilmore is coordinator of the unit ‘Organising in a Virtual World’. Some of her interests lie in the area of using online learning technologies within virtual learning environments. She has written extensively on this subject, and is one of the leading ‘eLearning lights’ of Portsmouth Business School. Margaret Yarr co-authored the constantly developing WebCT site ‘Abacus’ with fellow Accounting & Law colleague Caroline Willett. ‘Abacus’ is a departmental administration and networking site that has the potential to greatly improve the student experience for Accounting & Law Students. Andrea Foley is the eLearning Champion within the Department of Strategy & Business Systems, and is also a conduit for new practice to be disseminated from the ExPERT Centre to the Faculty. I want to find out about new eLearning news/developments. Check the elearning.port.ac.uk, website, or PBS Victory site. I need to get funding for a project that includes eLearning. Check the eTeam Victory website for sources of funding. I have a new project involving eLearning to put forward. David Starkey can advise on what is an acceptable proposal. ‘You Make, We Bake’ Members of academic staff within PBS are very busy, and often don’t have time to get to grips with the nuances of getting content into our Virtual Learning Environment. The eTeam will therefore be operating a policy of ‘You Make’ the content (schemes of work, lectures, case studies etc), and one of the eTeam will produce the site for you, or with you. We can also help to arrange video or podcast recordings in conjunction with the DCQE Media Production Unit. These can then be streamed from your site(s).

  4. The University eLearning Strategy Action Plan 2007-2010 What this policy means for PBS 5 4 The UoP eLearning Strategy (contd.) Extracts from the UoP eLearning Strategy What does this mean for PBS? Firstly, every new unit introduced onto PBS courses should have a VLE presence. Eventually this will be enforced through the DCQE course approvals process. This may be via unit design in Victory, or it may be via the use of Victory as a front end to a tutor’s existing website already in place supporting a unit. WebCT units will be migrated to Victory by DCQE following the Victory migration plan. To understand what current practice with WebCT and eLearning includes, a survey will be undertaken, and repeated each year until 2010. Funding for new media will be made available, and news of new sources of funding disseminated via a PBS Learning website. Training will be given to staff to enable them to use Victory properly.
