  2. Definition of A comma • A comma is a punctuation used in a sentence to separate ideas, or elements of a sentence.

  3. Rules • There are 6 main rules about how to use commas, and I will show you them NOW.

  4. Rule Numero Uno • Always use a comma when listing different elements. • Ex. Lauren sang White Rabbit, The Ocean, and Brick House at rehearsal.

  5. Rule #2 • Always use a comma when writing a compound sentence. (A sentence in which two complete thoughts are joined by a coordinating conjunction.) • Ex. I did not have lunch, so I went to get pizza at Papa Murphy’s after school.

  6. Rule 3 • Always use commas with complex sentences. ( When a dependent clause comes at the beginning.) • Ex. Although I asked you not to help me, I could see that you couldn’t resist interfering.

  7. Rule four • Use a comma when starting a sentence with an introductory phrase. • Ex. In order to be successful, I will need to be more focused on academics.

  8. Rule #5 • Use Commas with transition words. • Ex. Next, I went to the baseball game. • Ex. 2. Then, the teacher gave us a pop quiz.

  9. Rule number 6, last one • Use a comma when introducing a quote • Ex. Ben said, “Why do we have to go to school?”

  10. Common Mistakes with coommas • Putting a comma and conjunction with two independent clauses, when you only need a comma. • Ex. Mackenzie plays soccer, and she is good at it. – WRONG • Ex. Mackenzie plays soccer, she is good at it. – RIGHT • Not putting a comma when needed! • Ex. After eating my dad went to bed. - WRONG • Ex. After Eating, my dad went to bed. - RIGHT
